Everything points to damage to the coin. On the outside edges of the coin when squashed, they crimp on that area:  First sign of damage. This doesn't happen during the strike. The collar keeps it rounded and not dimpled like your coin. Just a normal Wheat cent with damage. Just one damaged area turns it into a cull coin. |

Possibly been in a bezel to make some sort of jewelry. The pressure from inserting in the bezel would distort the rim.

Back in the day (when dinosaurs roamed and I rode one uphill through blowing snow to and from school each day), banks gave out "Lucky Penny" gifts, with random cents encased in aluminum holders. They read "Lucky Penny" and the bank name on one side and "Keep Me And You'll Never Go Broke" on the other side. The encasing process left exactly that type of indentation on the edge. When I was a kid, I think I had them from about every bank in the Front Range.

@JC Stevens, When I was a young'un, the Western Slope was something as far away as Mars! That was in the land before I-70 days.  |
