How does one aquire a roll of proof coins? I never see them offered on the United States Mint site to purchase. I was just courious how people get them to sell on ebay. Thanks |

I think the people who are selling them on ebay are putting together rolls of coins taken out of proof sets. Many people break proof sets apart to cherrypick the nicest ones for grading. The coins that are left get sold as singles or get put into rolls. As a side note, I would not suggest purchasing proof coins in rolls. Rubbing against other coins in a roll will destroy the surfaces of a proof coin. Proof coins need to be holdered separately to protect the surfaces. |

Some sellers open proof sets, they sell individual proof coins or combine them to into a roll. You mostly get those on ebay. Mint doesn't sell them. |

To me a proof coin looks like it has powder on it....if you touch a proof coin with your fingers does it ruin the coin?

Yes, it will ruin it. You may not see the effects right away, but any finger oils will make an impression on the mirrored surfaces of a proof coin. This is another reason why it's best to purchase proof coins in their original Mint packaging or in a respected TPG slab. |

I buy several rolls of the proof coins in "rolls"...to resell....many of those selling the rolls dont actually ship them in rolls at all....they place them in the used portions of the quarter holders from the proof sets..........they come to you in 4 proof set boxes...touching the surface of a proof coin with anything is a no no......even with gloved hands you can leave small tiny hairline scratches that are impossible to remove.....and will be a part of the coins surface for all time.........coins shipped loosely in roll form will vibrate and rub together as Susan has indicated and some fo the coins may be ruined......the upside however is that sometimes you can buy these coins at a fraction of what you would pay singly and therefore you can choose the ones you want to keep and discount the rest........

Up through 1964, proofs were struck at the Philadelphia mint. From 1968-present, they are struck at San Francisco. Proof coins are not available from the Denver mint. Some commemoratives and bullion proofs are minted in West Point also.

Philly strikes a few proofs now days but most are commems and special issues. They made the proof '99 SBA for instance. West Point also strikes some proofs. I can't think of any made in Denver but seem to remember there are some in the works. Denver does make some highly Proof Like coins. Especially some cents from the late 1980's can hardly be told from proofs. Denver cranks out more PL's than Philly in most years. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
