The Halumin ring casts light sideways into the ring interior. For sure lighting is the most difficult part of coin photography, and I've seen (and built for myself) a very wide range of creative solutions. I'm personally not fond of extreme side-lighting, though I have built systems for folks doing variety attributions that have very directional lighting in order to optimize shadow details and bring out the variety surface features.
