American Numismatic Society - While early coppers of Syro-Palestine generally restrict their treatment of the natural world to inanimate subjects such as astral bodies and natural elements, mid-eighth-century CE issues depict a wide range of flora and fauna. Vegetal motifs include lilies, palms, and fruit trees. Animal motifs range from fish and scorpions to birds, lions, and elephants. Most motifs emphasize the wild aspects of nature that lie outside the control of mankind. Accompanied by statements of faith and Qur'anic verse, the motifs appear to form statements about the manifestation of God's will in this world. Stuart Sears (ANS Life Fellow) will discuss the relationship of these motifs to their respective mint sites, as well as how and why they were adopted during the decline of the Umayyads and the rise of the 'Abbasids.
