Why not pursue something completely different? It helps pique one's interest and allows for learning something new.
If you collect US coins, pick a different country about which you know nothing. Put together a type set or a denomination set from a meaningful year from France, Uruguay, or Japan.
If you collect modern coins, pick something ancient, medieval, or early modern. What about 4th century Romans, 15th century continental Europe, or a design or year set of 18th century continental coins from groschen to thaler?
If you're an American, pick coins in a non-Latin, non-Germanic language. I think middle & far east coins are undervalued, as most westerners can't read them and differentiate differences to cherry-pick rarities.
seems to me that one of the most overlooked modern, inexpensive themes is bimetallics. more and more countries are adopting these. they are beautiful and diverse. plus dealers' foreign bins are loaded with them at kid friendly prices.

Samoth & MySilverYears - those are great ideas that I could get behind. Maybe if either kid has a school project on another country, it would be a good excuse to go down one of those paths.
