If you collect US coins, pick a different country about which you know nothing. Put together a type set or a denomination set from a meaningful year from France, Uruguay, or Japan. If you collect modern coins, pick something ancient, medieval, or early modern. What about 4th century Romans, 15th century continental Europe, or a design or year set of 18th century continental coins from groschen to thaler? If you're an American, pick coins in a non-Latin, non-Germanic language. I think middle & far east coins are undervalued, as most westerners can't read them and differentiate differences to cherry-pick rarities. Samoth & MySilverYears - those are great ideas that I could get behind. Maybe if either kid has a school project on another country, it would be a good excuse to go down one of those paths.
