Picked this one up from auction as a spontaneous purchase, I'm not a big Franklin collector. Do you agree with the FBL? I know it's a touchy subject on some years. Thanks for any opinion
Well, all horizontal bell lines are supposed to be separate and distinct - Does that apply to this particular example - I guess FBL are like Full Steps on nickels - the graders simply are not following a set standard.
I think MS65 is realistic but not the FBL I was always thought that FBL is a designation where the two sets of horizontal lines at the bottom of the Liberty Bell are fully struck, distinct, and unbroken and undisturbed.
here are the requirements that PCGS and NGC go by for the designation. I would assume the ANACS would follow the same. the line appear to be full however, there looks to be impingement on pretty much all of them. just like FB on the Mercs you never know what they see. this is why you buy the coin not the holder
NGC: All horizontal bell lines must be separate; no minimum grade, but most FBL coins are Mint State
PCGS: Requires MS-60 or better, full separation of the lines, and no major cuts or distracting marks
