Looking at past ANA convention sites, I've noticed a striking omission: New York City is the largest city in the country and yet has not hosted the World's Fair of Money since 2002. The convention could achieve an unprecedented scale if it were to return to the Big Apple, opening its doors to people the world over, given how central of a hub the city is.

Could it be that the state of New York has
a tax on numismatic products?

I say because NYC is way too expensive of a place to visit.

I would have assumed it's at least partly because NYC already has its own large annual coin show (NYINC), and doesn't really need a second one, especially if other large cities in the country never get a regular major coin show.

This ANA web page has a clickable list of all prior ANA show venue locations: https://www.money.org/convention-history/

Since 2011 the WFM has been held in Chicago more often than not, but they do try to spread it around the country. Prior to 2011 it was rarely held in the same city more than once a decade. I can only assume the Chicago ones have proved popular/profitable, so they regularly return there.

From what I have heard, there are various factors. The big one is sales tax on coins. Another is ease of travel. Many dealers want the ability to get a direct flight to the location. Also their experience dealing with various venues in the past.

New York is exempt only on purchases over $1,000. The costs for hosting could be prohibitive as well.

Chicago is a favorite spot because bullion and coins are exempt from tax and the ANA stores a lot of their stuff for the convention in the Chicago area. Also, they have had good experiences working with the convention center / hotels. They have the convention near O'Hare in Rosemont, which I'm sure is much cheaper than central Chicago and more convenient for people traveling by air.
