How To Identify Impaired Proof 1892 Barber Dimes?

Altaira Pillar of the Community Canada 2519 Posts	Posted Yesterday 4:23 pm Is there a way to positively ID a proof, when the coin is so heavily cleaned to the point where surfaces are obliterated? Otherwise this is just a terribly cleaned AU. The rims on this coin are strange and beveled (rims on both faces sloped down towards the outside edge) instead of flat or wired, like it was encased at one point. Shoutout to @CoinPhotoStudio for the two pics above. Visible die markers: Obverse: Raised dot under the end of the left ribbon. Reverse: Die line between IM, going up to the left foot of N. I'm trying to capture how weirdly shiny this thing is but it's not really working. Thanks Report this Post to the Staff

panzaldi Bedrock of the Community United States 18660 Posts	Posted Today 5H 26M ago i think this is a business strike. one marker is the denticles. on a proof these are going to be sharp and well defined and would not look like that even if it was circulated. AU details (cleaned/scratched) also, if you look close around the rev you will see metal disruption. these bumps on the surfaces could be from some type of chemical being applied in the attempt to clean it. those surfaces are not normal Report this Post to the Staff
Zurie Pillar of the Community United States 5668 Posts	Posted Today 5H 13M ago I looked a at least a dozen 1892 Barber proofs that were sold on Heritage, and none of them had either of the two die markers you pointed out. Also, there is a die clash from the bridge of Liberty's nose on the reverse, just to the right of DIME, which would not be there on a proof strike. Report this Post to the Staff
Altaira Pillar of the Community Canada 2519 Posts	Posted Today 4H 10M ago Nothing of this coin is original--hence the large "glamour" pics to clearly show what the surfaces look like--and it's making it difficult to determine what it started out with and what came from the effect of cleaning (or modification). Can it be safely assumed that the entire run of 1,245 proofs for this year came off a single die pair? If so, that eliminates the possibility that my coin is a proof. Report this Post to the Staff
