I have been looking to get a gold dollar as I already have several other types of US gold coins. May as well complete a set of the more modern and easier types.
Several times I have passed dollars from the common dates of the 1850 decade. 1851 and 1857 recently. Because they carried a small premium over gold and were lightly cleaned. The last 1857 one only on the obverse. The reverse was mint condition and well struck.
Really uncirculated 1 dollar coins do not seem to show up here for sale. Is it reasonable to assume that those coins with very slight traces of having been rubbed, of the kind only seen under strong side light, should be dismissed as bullion? Or am I being too picky and those are regarded as collectible?
