Picked up this one last month, courtesy of an old friend who plucked it out of a mint-wrapped roll.

It's a cool plating error. I spoke with my connection from the plating plant at the Winnipeg mint, they call planchets with this effect as "tiger blanks". At some point either copper salts or copper solution was in contact with the nickel top layer when it shouldn't have been, leaving the copper&-coloured blemish on the surface of the coin.

Technically, it is minor error, but quite visually appealing.

That's a very cool looking coin, SPP-Ottawa! Evidently there's not much separation between the copper-plating and nickel-plating areas of the plant.
