After reading the die ring entry again, I wonder if it's not a drop of something acidic that etched the die. The perimeter edge of a drop would be where the liquid, die metal, and air intersect.

Those are excellent close up photos. I can see the edge of the raised area.

Don't have a clue what caused it however.

That sounds like the most reasonable explanation yet.
BTW, this is not unique - you can find several just like it on ebay with the mark in the same place.
