I just picked the following coin up today from a dealer's 6 cent
Wheat cent junk bin. I showed it to him and he agreed with my diagnosis: the coin was likely struck through a partially capped die. The coin appears to be a genuine strike through rather than post-mint damage (
PMD) because there is no "lip" around the edge of the deformity. Now, to be clear, the coin does unfortunately also exhibit
PMD, in the form of a couple of scratches near the impression of the date. Wheat cents capped dies appear to come up for sale quite a bit more scarcely than their
Memorial cent counterparts, so I will likely submit the coin to ANACS for authentication and encapsulation. I do not anticipate a windfall, but am excited by the find.
