I should preface this by explaining what kind of collector I am. I started collecting world coins as a kid in the early 1990s and, living in a rural area far from any coin shops, soon discovered the joy of mail-order coin acquisition. I continue to collect minor world coins by country/place and historical period/ruler, without being much of a grade snob as my budget remains small. I'm fascinated by history, especially by interesting world events or places where different cultures interacted. For example, I recently acquired a $15 well-worn medieval coin from Caffa, a Genoese colony on the Black Sea coast. That's the kind of numismatic thing I get excited about.
So, that being said, I still like the old-school coin dealers who just have a no-frills website or maybe even just a list. It's an approach that keeps things simple and it's friendly to the small-budget collector. Does anyone else share this affinity and have any recommendations? Here are some of my favorite coin sources. I ordered coins from most of them in the 1990s and continue to buy from them today as they are still active.
Frank Robinson (fsrcoin.com)
Bob Reis (anythinganywhere.com)
Scott Semans (coincoin.com)
Joel's Coins (joelscoins.com)
Henry Heller - no website, just a list
Lauren and Richard Benson - just a list, and just by mail, not even e-mail - now that's old school!
I know coin collecting has changed a lot since the 1990s. I think these folks listed above are all Boomers, and I'm a Millennial, but I still like the old-school approach, although I also find plenty of coins on
ebay. But anyway, does anyone have an entry to add to this list?
Also, I know this has been discussed in some previous posts, but it's been a few years and I thought it merited revisiting in a fresh topic.
