Thanks Trout. :) I've got a couple of other really nicely toned ones as well, both proofs or prooflikes. The Maundy set boxes from the Victorian & some of the Edwardian boxes allowed for decent and proper toning. There's an Edward set up for auction at the moment but it has been cleaned or dipped except for the penny and to me that's not nearly as attractive as the toners.

I have probably 50-60 PCGS graded Maundy coins and all of them are toned to different degrees. I tend to view any of the older Maundy coins that are blast white as being dipped due to the way these particular coins were stored over the years. The interesting thing about these exquisite little coins is that they are Not that expensive and are still pretty easily procured  |

The Brit and Canadian coins seem to produce so many more fantastic naturally toned silver coins compared to their Australian counterparts.
The Silver content of the Aussie coins are the same but the climate is completely different and it may be the higher moisture content that is the reason for this.
Or it may be the higher mintages in the UK and Canada that creates a bigger pool of coins to choose from.
Yes we do have some stunningly toned coins in Aus But they are nowhere near as prolific and attainable as the Brit and Canadian coins sadly.
The toners from Aus other countries are beautiful with striking colours But the Canadian and Brit coins tend to have that delicate "Pastel" colouring that is just SO easy on the eyes.

Do you suppose it's about the way they treat the metal, either before or after the coins are minted, Trout? I'd read that's why rainbow Peace dollars are very unusual, compared to Morgans. |

I am new here. And I have some really oddly colored coinage, myself. Is there any instance when discoloration would actually be considered an error rather than a patina? The one I'm really curious about has a burgundy red Lincoln Memorial penny. And it does have a high finish shine, too. Lately, I have been comparison shopping for the right microscope for my interest in error coins. Otherwise, I would've added a pic Edited by Cheetah jen
