Picked up this 1971-S silver proof at my LCS today. I was very pleased with how's it looked so I bought an air tite for it. Was $7.00 okay for this? If it isn't I'm still fine with what I paid. (Also the picture optimizers wouldn't recognize that I oriented it right, so sorry if it's incorrect) -CH27   Collector of U.S. Coins, Varieties, and Colonial Coinage

I was able to spend these as a kid in the early to mid 1980s, and in the 1970s my Dad would get out his coin collection every once in a while. We would go through it piece by piece with him, and he would explain the differences between proof coins, mint set coins, mint marks, etc. I always remembered the Ike. It was such a big, hefty coin. It's large size was so apparent when looking at those proof sets. Funny that he had around 70 Morgan and Peace dollars in his collection, but I don't recall ever noticing those back then. I was just enamored with all the "current" circulating coins in proof format. They blew me away! Quote:

He would hand them to me as we were getting in his car. I have several of those to this day. Though heavily circulated they are priceless to me. |

Great story, Toot. I recall helping my Papa crush soda cans for recycling circa 1983-84. He would give my brother an I a couple of Ikes for helping. I remember him calling them silver dollars. So I got to hear money referred to as "silver dollars" at least a few times in my lifetime.

Lol! Well we have a lot in common Darth. I would spend Saturday night at my grandparents so I could go with my grandfather to collect recycling at the golf courses and parks We would get up @ 4 am and leave by 4:30. Most of the time we would return home by noon and have his1970 4 door Dodge Dart full of gunnysacks sacks of cans and bottles. We did this until his passing in 1979. I remember getting Ike's and Kennedy's as part of the payout when we brought the sacks to the recycling center.
Sure do miss those times!

1970 Dodge Dart...memories for sure as my grandfather that got me into coins drove one of these until the floorboard literally rusted through! It was his work car and it showed. The car lasted him a long time though, and most assuredly we got some Ikes while in it b/c its the car we weekly took all his change from his laundromats to the bank with. While there he often asked for Ikes.

Sure do miss those times! I miss yesteryear too. Such a different way of life my Papa lived compared to the way I grew up and how I live now. At least I got a glimpse of it. Thanks for sharing the memory. We need more of this. Quote:
