Your 1971 D MS66 could-should be a + grade. Except for a light die sink issue on IN, and T, in IGWT, this is a super nice strike. The lack of hits on jawline is exceptional, man, that's one clean coin. Beauty!

Perhaps without the die sink issue it would have received the +, but who knows? Either way, this Ike is PQ! Did you see my previous post about the possible proof planchet 71-D purchase? Take a look. Darth, I can say with confidence this is not a PL Ike. For your benefit I am offering to give you what you paid for it. Newest Ikequasitions.... 1976-D T1 with a filled D mint mark and a grease strike-thru on the reverse (muddled detail on the Liberty Bell and halfway through E. Pluribus Unum). The toning is quite pleasant to the eye.  And below is perhaps the UGLIEST Ike dollar I'll ever own. This is the circulation cameo Ike I was referring to in the other thread, jbuck. You rarely see Ikes like this- almost never. Just imagine if Ikes had continued to circulate to the present day. We'd see a whole lot more of these today just like we regularly see this look on Morgans. Anyway, once I got this thing under the lens I discovered, to my utter surprise and horror, that the obverse was completely corroded!   The reverse doesn't exhibit this pitted look at all. I'm fairly certain this Ike was dug out of the ground by some guy with a metal detector. However, I'm not sure why the reverse was unaffected.  Anyway, it's pretty neat as an enigma piece for the collection. I still like the circulated look it has, but I'm just not gonna zoom in for a closer look. Good thing I only paid $0.33 for it with the help of a few ebay bucks.   Obverse close-up: Oh man, those scratches....  |

Funny. Looking at the closeup of the IKe, and I know its not...just reminds me of it... the surface reminds me of a cast Chinese fake coin. Great Ike! It has seen some circulation, though, and the reverse has a dirty tone that mutes the "sparkle."  EDIT: I wanted to add the ebay pics here for future reference. The thing of it is, it showed up in a list of "related" results under a saved "Eisenhower PCGS" search. Otherwise, I probably would have never seen it. It was sheer luck. No one much cares about these, though, because they're not well known and not recognized by the TPGs. Heck, even the Ike Group doesn't offer a DIVa for it. But I do understand, as there is no verifiable proof from Mint records that proof planchet strikes for 1971-D Ikes actually happened. We just see the evidence in the coins themselves. |
