Nice Ike Darth. I have to wonder how long before people start trying to collect MD-only sets? It would be a fun hunt!

I was planning to sell this 1971-S proof Ike until I got it under the camera and noticed a couple of things. First of all, it's a Peg Leg, although non-serifed would be a more precise term. But the far cooler thing about this piece is the earth, which looks markedly different than the typical earth found on these proofs. It is almost perfectly round with a super frosty appearance. You can tell that this frosting extends beyond earth's boundaries and out into space. According to Ike Group member, Andy Oskham, the reason for this is because only the earth was re-treated on this particular reverse die. Here is part of his response to my images, which I first shared on the Ike Group forum:

"That earth was re-treated by itself, that's why it's so frosty and has a little "overspray" in the field on the edge. It was not uncommon for the mint to not do the entire die, as masking it was very time consuming. The over-frosting on the edges is fairly common among 71S and 72S Ike proofs. Some show straight/squared maksing edges. I can't speak for the later years." -AndyO

This would make sense because the eagle, for example, has a much glossier appearance by comparison. I guess this one will be staying in the collection.

Here's a comparison shot showing the super frosted earth and a "no re-treatment" die earth:

Great eye for detail Darth
Once you mentioned this, it made sense why the earth just didn't look quite right in the pic of the REV. I thought it might have been lighting or a camera anomaly.

So is this the "Frosty Earth" variety? So much for global warming

Thanks, guys.

Technically, I believe this would classify as a legitimate variety since an alteration was made to the actual die. However, there probably isn't much of a premium attached for most collectors. Still, as far as I'm concerned, it's nice to have an example.

Some rustic toning.... some "space blue" toning. Man, that blue color is mesmerizing....

@Darth:
On the second one down I note it says the serif was manually added to the R in Liberty. I have not heard of this one. Is this a very crude looking mint job when magnified? I have the version of 44-D WLH where the AW initials were added to the die by hand, and its very crude:

Yes, Earle. It looks crude, like when an artist adds clay to a sculpture. I asked about this anomaly on the Ike Group forum, and this is what Andy Oskam had to say:

Post-An-Ike-Eisenhower-Dollar

Here's a close up of the R. It isn't straight either. It is pointing in a north-eastern direction.

Post-An-Ike-Eisenhower-Dollar

I was unaware of this variety as well. I've been finding all kinds of surprises on these proof Ikes since getting my new System-3 for imaging. Nearly every proof in my little random stash had something going on with it.

Thanks for the info. Nice variety.

What is the system 3 you refer to?
