Quick quiz. What would you say about a dealer who offered less than double face for silver? Just checking the standards. I woud have given him more, but all I had on me was $5. We were both in a hurry, and didn't really even negotiate. He just handed them to me and left. There were clads in there, too. I had no idea there was that much silver until I got home. Today's box got me 3 silvers. 1953, 1964, and a 1965 canadian. was the 1965 canadian dime 80%?

Canada used 80% until 1967. I think they went to 50% in 1968, then clad.

Decided to start posting my finds from Dimes since halves have been seriously brutal up in the midwest here. Picked up 4 Boxes all S&S and found me 5 Rosies  . It feels good to not get skunked I must say lol. |

Great story cpc24! Do the coinstars always reject silvers? I just finished a box. FIVE SILVERS. An all time high for me. 48, 57, 60 and 2 64's. Two in one roll!

Nice find sich0015. I had an interesting find tonight. In one of the rolls - one of the dimes looked smaller than the others, so I decided to break that roll open. Well it wasn't a dime but some kind of token. Smaller than a dime with 6 small holes in the center of it. The front read: HONOLULU RAPID TRANSIT CO. 1924 LTD.. The back was much harder to read - but it read: GOOD FOR ONE FULL FARE.  It's the oldest "dime" I've had yet. I haven't had much luck taking pictures yet or else I'd post some. |

Never heard of that turning up in a roll mdj.
Well I turned in some dimes today at TD Bank, along with some pennies and nickels I'd searched. The machine messed up and I swear the dimes in the penny bag were mine. HOWEVER-I got someone else's money (I don't know who's) because the teller pulled six dollar coins-3 SBAs, 1 sac and 2 pres out of the discard chute and a bunch of amusement tokens and some foreign coins, and what looked like a proof bahamas 1 cent from 2009. It may just be shiny though.
All in all, I made up for what I lost.

I found three Canadian dimes today. A 2009, a 2002, and another one that was too chewed up to read. I have a ton of 1983P and 1982P Roosevelts now. Are they worth keeping ( Red Book says $5), or should I throw them up on ebay? |

1982-P and 1983-P Roosevelts are worth something? That can't be right, I've seen hundreds. I always look at the 1982 and see the "P" and go "DOH! I wish I was in Ohio!"

i think there were no mint stes for those two years. but honestly they are just worth face value unless they are in ms condition which would carry a slight premium. but if you are just saving all 1982 and 1983 I would say it's not worth your time. just spend them. |

I was talking to the teller at the bank today. He told me they used to custom order boxes of halves for a customer. He (the teller) said he talked to the Brinks guy and asked if they (Brinks) pulled out the silver first. The Brinks guy told him that yes they definitely pulled out the silver if they saw it! I think it was just some Brinks employees, and not company policy. Could be another reason silver halves are drying up.

I heard that Brinks hires high-schoolers for the summer to cull silver. They must take special precautions to not fall into the giant high-speed machine hoppers. They pull 40% and are paid a bonus for 90% halves.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

I heard that they cull the silver using independent contractors. The system is weird though - rather than working directly with the couriers, they exchange half dollars at the bank, using their own cash as collateral, but then return the clad halves to a different bank. The contractors are just paid using the silver they find!
