That's awesome man. Good for you. Stolen? Who knows? Maybe, maybe not. If it were stolen, and had been slabbed, I wouldn't think it would find its way back into circulation like that. Congrats on your once in a lifetime find. I am still waiting for someone to come in where I work and buy something with a Double Eagle.

Please post some pics when you get the coin back from ANACS.

If you a $950 offer for this coin, I'd jump on it. $950 for a problem piece with VF20 details is a great offer.

I agree, it might be difficult to get a better offer. But then again you could always keep it and have a great story to tell.

$950 is still quite a return considering it was pocket change.

I have had a chance to read some responses to my posting. This is the information right from my email from ANACS.

As God as my witness, I found this coin in the register at the gas station I work at. You can call any of the three coin dealers in the Kankakee, Il area I took it to when I found it. I know it sounds unbelievable, but it is the truth.

I'm glad it turned out to be geniune for you! That's awesome!

I guess it is possible that someone stole it and spent it not realizing what they had.

I don't think it would be likely that if someone stole it they would have cracked it out of the slab. I think even a dumb criminal would realize it's in a slab for a reason.

Even if they cracked it to avoid tracking it down by it's certification number, they would still realize it had some value.

Regardless, as soon as you get it back -

I am sure we'll eventually see pictures. I hope the scratches are minimal. I was wondering if you have any other coins. Do you collect coins? If not, you're off to a heck of a start. Unless you are hurting for money, the coin is a pretty good investment I would think. It hasn't gone down any in my lifetime.

I think the coin will arrive on Tuesday according to ANACS. I will take some pictures and try to scan it on my printer. I can transfer the pictures to my computer, then I have to figure out how to post them here. Anybody know how?

I have collected coins for 20 years. I started collecting while I was in college, working part-time, at a White Hen Pantry convenience store in the Chicago suburbs. I saw a lot of old coins there. I was there from 1991-94 and the store only took cash or food stamps.

Since then, I have bought mint sets, proof sets, modern commemoratives. Put Franklin, Roosevelt, Washington, Jefferson Sets together. Tried Standing Liberty's, Walking Liberty's, and Peace sets. Also, I have bought Canadian, South African, and New Zealand sets.

Now, I am down to just my U.S. mint and proof sets and some interesting U.S. and foreign.
