This is a token issued in the pattern of Akbar coin. They were issued over a long period after Akbar's reign, while some of them might have been contemporary issues as well.(S.C Sircar has mentioned about "Ramatanka" being in use during 16th century). These are usually called "temple tokens" though they must have been in use for various purposes.

@cara As far as I know, temple tokens are priced not much above bullion. They fall in the tokens group rather. Some contemporary tokens may fetch a small premium over it.

Can you identify this coin or token? Any idea why it would have been mounted in a ring?

@Jack Reisland:)I have tried to highlight the legend and annotate your coin to the maximum I could. The legend reads " as sultan al azam Ala al dunya wa aldin" on the obverse and "Abu ul fath(doubtful)Muhammadeen (can be Muhammad bin either). This legend can be there for only Ala ud din Muhammad. In Delhi, we have Ala ud din Muhammad shah Khilji, but this is not his coin by typology. Please look in Ghurid or similar dynasties for similar legend to attribute the coin precisely. In olden days, people used to wear coins as pendants and rings. This practice must be why it was put into the ring.
