Hello, Dr. Sreedhar, I was referred here from the general coin identification forum for help identifying a possible Mughal coin. I looked through your postings but could not find a similar pattern. The coin is 29mm, 10.8gm, and appears to be silver. Any identification and/or dating you can provide would be greatly appreciated. ----------------------------------------------------- An unrelated question - what are the holes in so many of the silver coins - usually near the center, and never completely through the coin - from? Are they test drillings for detecting counterfeits, like the test cuts on ancient Greek coins? Thanks, John Hewes

I just answered my own question! Thanks to en.numista.com, I see this is a tanks from the Delhi Sultanate.
Unfortunately, this is as far as I can get. I can't read the Persian writing to see who the ruler was or what year the coin was struck. Help?
John

@j_hewes:Welcome to CCF. Your coin is a Tanka or Ghiyaz ud din Balban, the Delhi ruler (1266-1287.AD) Find a similar coin here https://www.coincommunity.com/forum...7Balban3.jpgThe holes dug on the flan are actually those made to test purity. It could have been by mint masters or local silversmiths.

Here is a coin posted in page number 11 of this thread the mint being re-attributed to Tatta. It has some peculiarities. This is a rupee dated AH.1069 and RY.33, in the name of Shahjahan.Shahjahan ruled from AH.1037 to 1068. He was imprisoned that year. RY of Aurangazeb begins from 1068. So Shahjahan was not on the throne in AH.1069. Regnal years of Shahjahan that can fall in 1068 are 31 and 32. Thus this Shahjahan rupee is dated after his reign, both in AH and in RY.

Thanks scopru and Palouche. Thatta is not Thattapani. Thattapani is in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The mint city of Mughal rulers was Thatta near Karachi in the Sindh province of Pakistan. Shahjahan has built "Shahjahan Mosque" in this city.
