I really have no interest in advertising the mint's new Canadian Commemoratives and Non-Circulating Coinage.

RCM, this is web site that caters to numismatists, and our common love for the hobby and its coins - it is not a open market. What difference does it make if the coin images we requested are "off-sale"? What on earth does the "secondary market" have to do with us wanting some of the more popular RCM produced coins as avatars? If the RCM really cared about its numismatic heritage, and not the bottom line of its current offerings, then our requests would be a non-issue. What will become of the current avatars one year from now? Will the RCM ask CCF to remove them, because they are not part of the "current offerings" and are in the "secondary market"? Or will you want new collectors of 2012 (and beyond) to recognize some of the nicer 2011 coins struck by the RCM? Is the mint not proud of its past popular designs as much as the new ones? Do you think new and old collectors only buy new coins? We didn't approach Susan (forum Mom), because, in our mind, you were the source. The RCM probably has the nicest digital imagery, or even html files from older web files, archived somewhere, that could be used for this site. Our requests are a reflection of the heritage of coins struck at the RCM, and why some coins were so popular... my own avatar is a perfect example of that... Roger

SPP-Ottawa, with all due respect, no one is being forced to use any of the new Canadian coin avatars. Rather, they are "options" that have been added to the existing inventory of older Canadian coins.
Since introducing the new coins into the avatar mix, you might be noticing that a lot of people have been quick to update their avatars. In fact, many members have even posted their thanks because having the option to use one of their favourite new releases as their personal avatar makes them quite happy.
So bottom line - avatars area a personal thing and everyone can decide what works best for them. Some people like having the older coins. Some people like having the new coins. It's all about choice. BTW your 2003 penny avatar is a classic!

RCM, do you not have access to the older digital image files? I know how the RCM takes its photos, they are actually a merged image of many photos, to optimize the eye-appeal of the coin. We can scan all our old coins for Susan, but our photos pale in comparison to those the RCM used... I know if I wanted to publish a paper for the RCNA, or a numismatic book, it is quite easy getting copies of the images of past coins from the RCM. I just wonder why you don't have access to those images... Does the RCM supply copies of those digital images to the Canadian Currency Museum? We all have favourite coins, I wish I had my own avatar from the RCM image file, rather than my poor attempt at a digital photo....

SPP-Ottawa, so are you looking for an image of your 2003 penny? If yes, I will see if I can find it in our archives.

Wow, some serious ungrateful people here. I'm actually embarrassed to be even remotely associated with some of you. She didn't have to send any of them at all, it was a courtesy, but you complain that it's not enough. Unbelievable.... Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves.

+ another one for scubu's post. She probably just meant it's hard to find the not-current pictures with that "secondary market" comment. The RCM after all sells coins, not cars, so there's no obligation for them to follow up on off-sale coins. She has no obligation to look for anything in the first place. Way to go RCM rep, for keeping professional in the responses

Quote: SPP-Ottawa, so are you looking for an image of your 2003 penny? If yes, I will see if I can find it in our archives. No, that was not my point. I was referring to the other older images that were listed by our members. We all have favourite coins - I guess some of us got overly excited when you were soliciting us to request for our favourite coins. No need to waste time digging up old images. Frankly, your response about off sales and secondary markets was a reality check. Shame on me for expecting anything more...

You can breath easy - you don't know me, and are not even remotely associated with me. This has nothing to do with being grateful or ungrateful. I think my questions were valid and fair, given the initial request that the RCM gave us, asking us for "our favourite coins" so that we can have avatar images. I, nor anybody else, actually expected the answer we received. Some people are ok with it, some people were not and some people really don't care...

Quote: Grrrrr... Haha~ I thought about your photos too when I read that line. In my opinion you win out by far. RCM's stock photos in comparison tend to be lifeless and "photoshoped".
