Its hard to find a problem free coin in circulated grades. Many are cleaned, polished, or are scratched with big Xs. Every once and a while you will find a nice one up on ebay though. Keep looking!

I would speculate that store owners or people did that back in the day when they circulated so they were mistaken for quarters or somethiong along those lines but would like to know for sure.

I think this was actually one of the first coins I bought for the 7070 album because I had never seen one before I purchased the album. This is the one I purchased for the album

Sweet! I always thought that it was weird that LIBERTY on the double-dimes was raised on the shield, instead of incuse (like most, if not all, of the Seated Liberty series), and the arrows were in the right talon (indicating war?), and the motto "In God We Trust" is not present like other of the period, and the eagle was different, and Liberty's head...the list just goes on and on... She truly is an odd coin.

I just found one on ebay after doing a lot of searching. I was surprised at how hard it was to find a higher grade coin that was mostly problem free that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I went to one local coin shop and all they had were a couple low grade coins. The other coin shop had one in VF condition that looked good except for a small spot of corrosion. It wasn't that bad and I almost bought the coin, but I realized that what would happen is every time I looked at that coin I would immediately look at the spot. Everything decent on ebay seemed to be $300 or more, but finally about a week ago I found a nice one with a full "Liberty" that I picked up for $180. I'm a fan of oddball denominations so at some point I will probably put together a set of 20 cent pieces, but I'll wait until I have the money to do it. For such a small set you have to sink a lot of money into it to get everything! http://www.ebay.com/itm/23069769257....m1439.l2649

I saw a decent one listed as a quarter today on ebay, so that mistake continues to be made even today. It was 165.00, the retail price of the coin in VF, so maybe the mistake was made on purpose to trick somebody who thought they found a steal because it was mis-listed. Chance

I'm not sure, but that does sound reasonable. I did a quick search but I couldn't find anything. We'll have to wait for an expert...

I just checked my records, and it looks like I paid about $83 for my Twenty Cent Piece. At the time, that may have been the most I had ever spent on a single coin, but it was basically just a hole filler until I could someday buy a better example. Maybe at next year's Bay State Coin Show...

I always thought it'd be tough to get a decent-looking 20-cent piece without busting out a lot of dough. I won the above on ebay for $120, which while not cheap, didn't hurt too much. And I got the hole filled! It's not going to win anybody's hearts but at least it's clean and doesn't have any problems (oops! Just noticed the gouge on the eagle's chest!).

I had a very hard time filling this coin with one that I liked. I finally ended up with a PCGS XF-45; I was hoping to spend $200 or so but ended up going higher just because I could not find a coin with a good clear Liberty at that price. Spent a little more than I wanted but what the heck... This is not a good picture but here's mine:

I am on the lookout for one in about VF, any date. I will eventually get one from a postal auction conducted by one of Australia's lesding dealers. Just have to be patient. A lot of my collection has been acquired in this way over the last 10 years.
Although the price for grade pattern for the U.S. 20 cent coin is reasonably well established in Australia, I would be up against fewer bidders in Australia, if one comes up for auction.
If I am successful, I always pay cash on personal pickup with these auctions.

Sadly, this hole is empty in my 7070. I found the perfect, and I mean perfect, Twenty Cent coin a couple of years ago. The coin was absolutely stunning, with some honest wear and a beautiful tone. The price was a bit more than what I wanted to spend. Looking back, I wish I had given in to the temptation. I will probably never see a Twenty Cent coin like that again, at least not at that price.

Thanks for the replies and pictures everyone. Kind of nice to know that hole is a challenge for more than me, even if it means I'll have some competition when a nice one shows up in my budget range. I actually may sell the one I currently have and use the empty hole as motivation to move forward. I'll probably offer it here first. Although cleaned/polished, it has a really nice reverse strike which many lack. Thanks again. Happy Thanksgiving.
