Luckily she knows better. I'm "moderately" lucky that way. She doesn't "get" my hobby but she knows enough not to clean them. She prettymuch leaves everything alone, occasionally I'll get her to rollsearch with me but that's only been once or twice.
i'd like her to share it with me, but if she doesn't want to what's a guy to do? She doesn't impede me at all so I cant complain. And yes she has access to the safe...she has to considering she bought it for me.

Quote: I certainly didn't want to be the one to break the news to him that any value he may have once had was gone. I just didnt have the heart. You have a good heart my friend! I'm afraid that with all the liquor that flows at my company dinner I wouldn't have been able to contain myself!

I read in another forum about a guy who had to explain the seller spent a couple hours in the parking lot erasing about $20,000 worth of value from his coins.
You hafta wonder what people are thinking. Don't they think a dealer can afford his own eraser?

I agree with everybody that this is horrible, but I have to point that the guy didn't exactly destroy "any value" these coins had. They are still silver and, given that silver is at $30+ these days, it's not exactly chump change. Plus, unless the Morgans were high grade or key dates to begin with, it's unlikely the value was hurt much in the first place. They may not bring the premium he might expect to get for "mint" coins, but they certainly still have substantial value.

More importantly, advise him so he doesn't do it to future acquisitions that could have value.

You should get your wife to tell him about this site ... then within a few threads, he'll discover the truth about cleaning coins, but you won't have to be the guy that told him, "directly" ...

You should've said, "Yeah, and they're ONLY silver now. That's like having a really beat up Mercedes and being proud of it just because it says Mercedes Benz on it."
He'll take the news better if it comes from a trusted source like you. Wouldn't it just suck if he came to the day he needed to sell it for hundreds only to find out it's worth $25-35? He needs to hear it.

You should have slapped him then told him he needs to use a Dremel tool to "Bring out the details"!

I was just really bummed because I was looking forwad to having someone to talk to at this party every year. Don't get me wrong the party is awesome, but sometimes conversation leaves a little to be desired, when I know essentially nothing and no-one.
And talking about coins is always cool too, regardless

Well Secret Argent Man, on the bright-side => I'm sure that if he collects coins, he's still gonna want to talk about coins ... but while you're talking about coins next Christmas, merely mention/gently-warn-him that you've heard that cleaning coins "may" reduce the coins value, and then leave it at that ... you can still talk about coins (just don't let that mutha get hold of your coins!) ... yes, talking about coins is always cool ..

yes, I totally agree ... you definitely have to know who your audience is ... => as long as we don't sound too obsessed and geeky, right?
