1965 Washington Quarter - Annealing Error?

The coin's surface has the appearance of a naturally toned copper coin, red brown to purples. The edge has no seam. Science experiment or truly an error? Thanks for looking. Edit: Here's a closeup and coin scope shots: Edited edit: I don't mean to be obtuse, I'm not convinced it's a true error.
