Jeff,
Does your reference attribute a rarity grade...I.e.R1 through R12?

Our resident 2C expert is nohope587, although he'd modestly deny that status. Perhaps we can engage him for an opinion.

I believe NoHope forumed a similar variety in a different grade just recently. I would welcome ANYONE who has a Kevin Flynn reference.

P.s. I need to reload my other pictures..reverse, angle shots to show the sharp device edges, etc.

Turns out to be a surprise...
1865 Fancy 5 TRIPLE. DATE, Breen 2385!
And it has been confirmed higher grade uncirculate with original color.
I guess this is an early Christmas present!
I will shortly post pictures of the reverse and page from Breen's reference.

Greetings All,

I'm uploading additional images of the: reverse, and closeup of the date, and of the information page from W. Breen's "Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins".

AU58, I do not see any evidence of triple dye on the obverse, double obviously though. However you can see much better then we can in person and I do hope it is a triple dye that would be cool

Hey Chris,
The varity per W. Breen is undeniable. The Triple is exactly like his example in his book "Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins". Furthermore, he is quoted as saying "Later die states show only doubling." See image from his reference text in my later pictures.

I've also have a general consensus of high MS grade by several experienced dealers/specialist. The coin has NO WEAR and razor sharp details (see tilted images of this coin). But I always appreciate your opinion.

JadeSpear I',m on the road for the next week or so. I'll make a point to check my reference books to confirm it when I get back. It certainly looks to be the real deal. I am a little Leary of Breen's book as it has a couple of shall we say mistakes. I put a little more stock in Leone or Flynn. It certainly is a RPD its rarity is the only thing I might question.

Hello NoHope,

Thanks for your quick note.
I just got confirmation from The Kevin Flynn and he said "...this definitely Breen 2385, Triple punched date."!
I am thrilled. I do not think too many have come up in auction in MS r/b grades. I am speaking with Heritage presently. Meanwhile, I am sending this off to PCGS.
Please take a look at my coin when you get free. Let me know what you think.
Thanks,

Yep it's a triple punched date! The notch in the top of the 8 is not as pronounced in the triple date as in the double daye also the shift is in a different direction. I have Breen, Leone, and both Flynn references, but in storage, I'll see if I can get them out, I also might have this variety, only mine would be VF or less I'm sure. Big time score, don't know what I was saying regarding the color in my first comment, I must have been replying and looking at another tab at the time. I'd bet PCGS would grade this baby, probably if the color is original. Looks UNC probably around MS62BN, but hard to tell from the photos alone.

FYI...I will submit to NGC. PCGS doesn't attribute varieties!
Amazing that they do not. So off to NGC this coin and many other varieties will go....
