Can't speak for anyone else, but we're buying them at a good price (as in, I don't think any of the locals would pay more).
The head dingaling mentions that they got a $50 gold piece another year and sold it for $400, which could be anything from fair to a ripoff, depending on when it was.

So your saying your selling the finds in the Kettle and giving the profits to Sally or are you pocketing the profits. Guess I dont understand what you are doing.

Sorry, not Bigfreds problem. He is a business man. Why dont the people that drop these coins just give "Sally" the FMV? I guess they give to boost their egos? Fred is more than fair I am sure!

Dont you think that the people that put these valuable items in the Kettle assume that Sally Anne will reap the profits! Talk about robbing from the poor. Here in Edmonton someone put a Gold 1oz. coin in the kettle and it was on the news at how generous someone was.

The SA isn't a coin dealer, and if they don't think to contact one, money is money. Dump a 0.1 oz gold eagle into a coin counter and it counts as a dime. Quote:

VALUABLE OLD COIN APPEARS IN DONATION KETTLE-Gettysburg PA-"Someone dropped a rare coin worth about $1700.00 into a Salvation Army kettle in central Pennsylvania again. The Evening Sun of Hanover reports a gold South African Krugerrand was discovered Wednesday in a kettle outside a Walmart near Gettysburg. The valuable currency has appeared in Gettysburg area kettles for several years But no one knows whom to thank for the generosity. Local Salvation Army unit organizer C.K. Roulette says he's content with the mystery remaining unsolved. He says it sparks peoples' imaginations and adds excitement during long, cold hours of bell-ringing. Krugerrands have also turned up in recent years in Salvation Army kettles in Florida, Indiana, Colorado and Washington." Pretty amazing at the generosity of some people. Just glad it was not a TARGET since they will not let the Salvation Army ring at their facilities (at least in the deep south). |

Here in Idaho we used to have somebody who would drop a gold coin in the bucket each year. Happened for a long time. Ringers we always wanting to be the one to find it. I think the person who was doing it must have died because they stopped a few years ago, after doing ever year for 25 or 30 years.
All the veterans in my area always give to the Salvation Army but never to the Red Cross. I asked about it one time and apparently during WWII the Red Cross charged for the donut and coffee but the Salvation Army always gave them away for free to the troops if they could not pay. I think the man who was doing this was probably a veteran and passed away.

Got another call last nite. They've accumulated a few gold rings and some unspecified coins. Since she didn't call this morning, looks like it will be monday before we find out.

She took an extended Christmas, and called me yesterday.
Five gold rings
OK, there were only four.
Three of which were just plated.
The fourth was a .5 dwt 10K baby initial ring.
Kinda a letdown after the other goodies.

I'm not sure what to think of this. So the salvation army is calling you up to buy the items donated by people in the bins?
How did you get involved with this exchange if that is the case. Very interesting

Someone dropped a Krugerrand in a kettle here in TN a few weeks back. Apparently, they do it every year.

If I recall from other posts, biggfredd is a coin dealer with a brick and mortar shop, so it isn't at all unusual that they would call him to sell their goodies.
