when I look at yours against mine, nothing looks right on the Obverse, and the Reverse is about the same. So I really think its fake

What are "denticles"?

Those are the little rectangular things right inside of the rim that suround the perimeter of the coin. Yours look inconsistent and somewhat circular in places and slightly separated from the rim, whereas on Bryan's example they are evenly spaced, consistent and connect directly to the rim.

However, if this is something you found, that's still pretty cool. As long as you didnt sink several hundred into it(which is what it would be worth if genuine), then it's still a neat conversation piece.

I'd say a very nice counterfiet coin. Well made and quite acurate, the lettering on the reverse is what I don't see matching up to a real 1876-S Trade dollar, serifs aren't quite correct and the thickness of some of the lettering seems a bit off. The place of origin also says a bit, (I know that Trade dollars were made for the oriental trade) the fact it came from an area known to be the counterfiet hub of rare US coins is suspect in itself somewhat. I'd take it to a reputable dealer near you for a look see in hand. If the dealer isn't sure about it, then I'd send it to ANACS as they are probably the cheapest grading company for you to submit it.

Good luck, it very well could be real, this is a close call, almost impossible to tell from photos alone.

1876-S-Trade-Dollar?

The part that bothers me is the space above AMERICA. Looks bigger than above UNITED.

I gotta say fake, if you look at the reverse, there is no period after " Trade dollar"

And " Trade dollar" is way to fay from the rim

There should be nothing on a silver coin which comes off easily with handling.

First, Cowboy! Quit handling! From your comment, it sounds like you're touching the face, instead of the RIMS ONLY!

That yellow area on the reverse, which does indeed look lighter in the newer pix, seems to be decomposed tape, which comes off easily when dried and hardened.

Back to Cowboy: Put it in a glass or metal container, cover it with acetone for a few hours, with a lid to prevent rapid evaporation. That should remove the tape.

Was it in the ground?

Not likely. Silver in the ground seldom tarnishes.

I'm a Medevac pilot in Afghan and found this all tarnished up this morning at the market. I only gave five bucks for it and the guy I bought it from did not speak English nor did he know what country this coin was from.

The country it's from is prolly China. Those traders have handled money from dozens of countries for decades and know more about coins than you or I ever will. There is no way they're gonna sell you $26 worth of silver for five bucks.

Just curious, if you flip it around the 9-3 axis, if the reverse upright, like on typical US coins? If it's upside down, it's likely fake

Current guess: 99.99% likely it's fake.

I deg to biffer. There's nothing "nice" about counterfoots. I might go with a very deceptive counterfeit.

Opps caught me, you are right biggfredd! Nothing nice about counterfeit coins. I should know better than that. I should have used better wording like very well made or super deceptive.

Thanks for pointing that out.

fake or not I learned something today about coins and had a lot of fun doing it! It also gave me hope in something for a bit so I would say I got my money's worth

I also believe it's fake but your $5 was well spent since it took your mind off the danger you deal with on a daily basis. Thank you for your service to our country.

First, thank you for your service. Second, the seller might not know US coinage, but he probably knows silver or not. If he sold you this for $5 US dollars, he was certain it's not silver.
Bryan: nice coin!
