Possibly because it is coppernickel and not copper.

Coppernickel? It can't be that simple...can it?

One way to find out would be to look and see if they use the color designations for the 1857 - 1863 cents. They are coppernickel as well.

that's right, no red or red/brown designations on copper-nickel indians/FE cents. If you find yourself a nice red copper nickel cent, you should consider going the other way.

Exactly. The nickel alloy prevents copper from toning the same way.
If anything, it probably helped more early IHCs survive the environment.

Still looking for a J-228 within my price range. Too bad about Rick Snow's being sold for $850...I could have managed that one.

I would get the account with PCGS. Coins in PCGS holders have more market value. You can send the coin to them directly yourself.

We don't know how it graded, the OP hasn't been here since Jan 2012.

oih82w8,

Make sure you keep looking at all the regular MS 1859 Indians you see. I've seen at least three J-228's so far that were just slabbed as regular 1859 indians.

After looking at these photos, I really think the OPs coin was made in China. Details look too mushy for a U.S. mint made pattern.

you see 1859 patterns slabbed as normal 1859's because MS patterns go for less than MS normal 1859's.
