OK Thanks a lot. But it was interesting to learn that a coin from Gangra was found on the territory of Bulgaria if I understood well.

Really ? That's very very interesting. On a former paper I wrote, I noticed that coins from Sinope were also found in Crimea and on the Bulgarian territory. It looks that it is the same with Gangra. Very interesting on the question of the circulation of these provincial coins.

I am impatient to see it !

Hi T0rress,

Do you have now pictures of your Gangra coin ? I'm still interested in it.

Did you remind what type it was?

The original coin had a reverse that showed buildings or houses (maybe just one large building?) osiris, I think the text (GammaANGammaPΩN) ran horizontally across the bottom of the coin and the structure, whatever it was filled most of the coin in size. The structure did not look anything like a campgate or temple or any other buildings I have seen on an ancient coin.

I would recognize it if I saw a similar example, I remember it well as I liked it very much and had not seen anything like it anywhere before.

I dont think we ever 100% IDed it so cant give you the 'accepted description'. Sorry to 'jump-in' but I have not seen t0rress posting recently and I hoped I could help. I would also like to learn more about coins from Gangra, do you have a website for your papers?

I'm 99% sure (t0rress would need to confirm) that the above is the same / very similar to the original coin posted here, although in much worse condition.

Hi Bobby, hi T0rress,

Many thanks for the information. The Harvard coin fits in a serie of 4 coins (onr in Glasgow, one in Berlin, one in Saint-Florian) + one with the info you kindly gave to me. In our book, it appears under the following description (in french sorry, but quite easily understandable I think):

III/88 â€" Paysage urbain
R102 : APXЄO / PAFLA // GANGPA (en haut et à l'exergue).
R103-104 : APX / PAF // GANGPWN (en haut et à l'exergue).
Paysage urbain fait de deux tours, une maison et un temple, le tout sur une l. de s.

We don't have any website, sorry, but our book will appear next year under this title : GANGRA-GERMANICOPOLIS DE PAPHLAGONIE, « FOYER DES DIEUX ». ÉTUDE DE NUMISMATIQUE ET D'HISTOIRE

t0rress, how can I find your new thread ?

I got it, thanks.

We know this type for years 214 and 215 with Severus portrait on obverse. For year 215, we know 4 series, with different reverse legends. These are the folowing ones :

S1 : GЄPMANI-KOPOLЄW¢ / Є-T (à g. et à dr.) ¢ЄI

S2 : GЄPMANIK-OPOLЄW¢ ЄT / ¢ЄI (à l'exergue).

S3 : APX PA GЄP[M]-ANIKO Є¢TI / QЄWN (à l'exergue)

S 4 : APX P GЄP-MAN E¢TIA / QЄWN (à l'exergue)

Based on some well preserved specimens, the eagle seems standing on cippus instead of altar.

Do you think that your coin fits in one of the above series ? It's really interesting to have two of these coins found in Bulgaria. Congratulations for the find !

I will keep an eye open for GANGRA-GERMANICOPOLIS DE PAPHLAGONIE, 'FOYER DES DIEUX' ÉTUDE DE NUMISMATIQUE ET D'HISTOIRE.

I may have to improve my French a lot before I attempt to read it

Don't worry about it. Our french is quite readable.
