HighFred, and others, Mobil link. I do not currently have a pc so my phone is doing some extra browsing. Googled counterfeit toonies and got a video with the same 2004 I have.

Counterfeit-Toonies?

Counterfeit-Toonies?

There is a very noticeable die crack between L and I. The center pops out easily with smooth core edge and inner ring edge. (no locking mechanism) outer rim and Canada look weak.

Fake?

I was JUST about to report this on here for you guys to express my outrage of finding one of these in my household. I spotted it from a mile away. They look like toys. They remind me of the 5 Wu Jiao coin of China. The edges give it away, but especially the core's color and shoddy placement of the core. The color is drab and although it is fake there are meter marks around it, either to make it look real and circulated or people have actually been passing this as current.

Sad. And making me mad. The year is 2004 and doesn't even make the proper sound when you drop it - doesn't even bounce.

Libertad,

Would you like to donate, or swap that counterfeit Twoonie with a real one, for the sake of research? I have only zapped one example on the XRF, and would like to test more. All the counterfeits I do research, end up with either the RCMP or those working with the RCMP, so it will not end up in your change again...

You can contact me via the 'contact poster' button above.

Where is your die crack? See for yourself, as my pictures are clearer than yours, it seems. What I can say is that the color on both of ours match up. When you put the fake and a real toonie side by side looking at the rim, the color is SO obvious. The fake has a dull grey look and the ridges that go along half of the coin continue in between sections. The fake I found has a meter mark from a parking meter, which either means it was placed there or it's been circulating. Even the SOUND of the coin is off. You flip it and you hear nothing. You drop it on a table and it doesn't have that "ting" to it; it sort of just falls into place like a plastic token. The whole coin is very smooth to the touch, especially closer to the edge, and there is way too much detail on that woman's necklace. Also, the fake and real toonies weigh the same and they are both magnetic.

So I brought to the attention of the coin's owner and he's given it to me to dispose of. SPP-Ottawa, show me a few others like it, either by link or email me some pictures. I'd like to compare for myself even though I know it's a counterfeit. I'm still upset by this.

Where should the die crack be?

Has there been any fake 2012 toonies found? I'm trying to figure out why a toonie I found does not have the proper metal content of a normal toonie, no ting sound when you flip it. Iv come across some fakes but they all had a slit on the polar bears foot. The coin I found today has a normal foot but no ting sound

There was an issue of fake 2004 and 2005 $2 from the Montreal area about 2004. The issue was not described in detail. Most of the forgeries, and the perpetrators, were wrapped up by the police. These issues have a curved edge between the letters and the field; rifling that was done around the whole coin, and then sections were filed (almost) flat. They do not "ring". There are some mistakes in the details, but I got one and carried it around in my pocket for 4 days around Christmas time last year before I really looked at it with a magnifying glass and realized it was fake.

The new series, issued starting last year, has dates of 1996, 1952-2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006. These first showed up in and around Toronto, and later appeared in Gatineau-Ottawa, and have made it to Montreal and Toronto. They are about 3-6% of Toronto's supply, 0.5% of Ottawa's supply, and smaller amounts in Montreal and Vancouver, and other spots across Canada. These have the "cloven hoof" on the bear, 1952-2002 and 2006 with straight ends to the 9 and 6, maple leafs in different spots, sizes, and designs, and hair and jewel variations. They use the corresponding different obverse heads.

I heard one report, no pictures, of 2012, 2013, and 2014 2$ counterfeits with a poor security circle, and missing "hologram" maple leafs at the top. I am not sure whether these exist.

There was also a report of a $1 2012 coin, with a picture, which seems similar to the big series- the surface is rough, the back of the bird and the trees behind it are weak, and other smaller details are not right.

Check the other 4 forum listings for counterfeit coin information.

I posted a picture of a new fake 1996 toonie. But I also posted about a 2012 toonie I have that has no "ring" to it but it dosnt look different then a normal 2012 toonie. I posted a video showing the sound difference, check it out if you get a second. I'm not sure what's wrong with this coin to make it sound weird
