Hey, maybe they rubbed these with mercury. My father in law tells me that as a boy they use to take copper cents and rub them with mercury and they would turn mirror like silver. This may be why he glows in the dark, too. Jim

Looks like it was gonna be used as jewelry, or maybe in a belt buckle. That's hideous

For the benefit of our new collectors, this is how we know this coin is definitely polished and not a "proof strike".

First of all, the devices are all as equally shined as the fields. In a proof strike, there will be at least slight frosting on a Morgan. Granted, there are some proof coins that I've seen that have no frosting at all, but there would not be duller areas in the crevices of the design.

If you look at the stars, lettering, and date, you will see how dull the field is around these points. This is because it is not possible to polish a coin evenly through these areas. This is probably the easiest way to tell a polished or cleaned coin.

One other thing to look at is the design details. On this coin, the eagle's breast feathers are obviously worn. With a proof strike, the details are more pronounced, not less. This is because a proof coin is struck multiple times. The feather detail on this coin has been rubbed off with the polishing.

I would send it to Pimp My Ride. They could use it as a side mirror. Gusp

Another beautiful coin destroyed because of greed. Might as well melt it down and make a fork out of it because that is all its good for now.

Everyone is jumping to conclusions about that coin. It was actually produced by the US Mint as shown but from a super secret department. This is a brach of the Mint called MESS. It stands for Mint Error Secret Services. They produce coins such as this, all mint errors, publicize them, sell them as if under the table and all to inspire the greater need for coin collectors.
