I am fairly conservative on grading, especially with a coin series where I have very little experience, ie: the Morgan dollar series. I will go MS62 or MS63. Nice coin though!

This would more than likely get a 63 or 64 today.

Wow, didn't see that one coming. I take it you feel it is undergraded instead of a slider?

Reminds me of my 1902 s

Definitely. New Orleans Morgans were weakly struck to begin with, especially the 83 & 84.
I don't see any wear :)

That grading is from the early days.

What do you expect.

It would probably grade higher now.

They did not even know what a weak strike was then.

Although the reverse is very strong, look at the eagles toes, er talons.

You know the hair on the obverse is pretty strong in places.

Actually a nice strike.

Maybe they graded two 1883 O's that day and there's an AU coin in a MS holder out there somewhere?

I am guessing they thought that was wear around the ear instead of a soft strike that New Orleans minted Morgans are plagues with
