Being new here and have done much serious collecting for years. I have a large jar (55lbs) of pennies prior to 1990, Is there any coins beside wheat cents in the 59 and newer mintages that I should look for? Also some terms used I dont know? like CWR or LWC Thanks Gary

garys64wildact There are many things you can look for in your jar of pennies. It really depends what you want to look for. There are repunched mintmarks (RPMs) below the dates of pennies before 1990. These RPMs can be sold for a premium. Also, there are doubled dies which can be worth a lot. Also, it is a good idea to keep any cents you find with a high grade. There is a good reference website called coppercoins.com for the doublied dies and RPMS A lot of people are very knowledge and helpful on this forum so and we hope you stick around. Btw, CWR stands for customer wrapped roll and LWC stands for Lincoln Wheat cent.

My wife got 6 wheats in her box of pennies yesterday. She thought that was pretty bad.

Quote: Is there any coins beside wheat cents in the 59 and newer mintages that I should look for? As others have mentioned, there are lots of things that you can look for. A lot of people look for the 1998, 1999, and 2000 WAM ( Wide AM), as well as the 1992 CAM ( Close AM). There are different date sizes, such as the 1960 and 1982 large and small dates. There are also doubled dies on quite a few LMC. As someone mentioned, there are repunched mint marks as well as over mint marks. However, these only exist prior to 1990. There really are countless things to look for. Here is a list of the top 50 varieties, some of which are LMC. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Top50.htmlHere is a fantastic resource that allows you to see varieties by year. http://coppercoins.com/

Hey there is still copper available, unless he pulled that too.

Dumpers can sometimes be transient, or in other words don't always dump at the same bank. Talk to your tellers. They are the only ones who know for sure...

After I search my box of pennies( or nickels, dimes, quarters and Halfs) I rewrap them and deposit them back into my account.(at a different bank them I picked them up from) The teller has no choice but to take them. She simply smiles and counts how many rolls I have today. Hopefully there aren't any roll searchers using my dump bank for pick up. It will make for a boring evening for them.

Even if you are depositing to an account, the bank is under no obligation to take them. Look to a future where banks will charge to take coins, just like Coinstar.

I have an account with US Bank and right now they don't charge me a fee to return my rejects. They do charge me 3.50 for a 50 dollar bag of pennies. I got 18 wheats and a nice 1960 D/D.

I guess I am a little confused at this...the whole reason for being upset is because they were hand rolled? Seems to me that there should still be a ton of things to look for. I know that if I went through those coins I would find a few that I would like to keep, and the next person would do the same. The point is, we all look for different things and just because someone else rolled them does not mean you cannot find something special in there, how many times have you gone through an entire box and found only 1 coin worth keeping? And if that is what happened, then it was worth it for that single coin...in other words, find the items the original person should have kept, you never know.

No, the reason for being displeased is because the entire box was clearly searched by a roll hunter. Quote: Seems to me that there should still be a ton of things to look for. Apparently you'd be just as happy with them as you would with unsearched coins.
