I don't think I would even pay $50 for it. I know it is a super rare coin and all, but it would bring my eyes more pain than pleasure.

Bids are up to $312.99 on this - hard to believe anyone would pay that!

I wouldn't say it's so hard. Many Hobo nickels have gone for much more. :-)

It's the novelty, plus the art value (as it is rather pleasing to the eye). I wouldn't be surprised if it goes for $500.

I hate to see any coins defaced, but I agree there are some nice Hobo nickels. I just don't see much that qualifies as "art" in what was done to that 1793 cent. Wish I could have that one, untouched! :) I did tell the seller yesterday that the counterstamped 2 might actually be a combined 9 and 2, but no idea in either case what it represented - maybe 1792 or 1829 or 1929. I guess we'll never know.

If it had been an S-1 chain cent I would have.

My guess is that this may have been someone's effort to produce the first Two Cent Piece ... looks like a poker chip, too.

Even at $500 + it's a great conversation and study piece.
