Having another look at it now and it is actually a ripper coin. Very nicely struck as the title suggests! Hope you win.

Enworb, you're not wrong, I can't stop looking at it. Got a nice little spot for it in my type album.
Unfortunately, I'll have to go to Coin Lovers Anonymous in the not too distant future if I keep it up.

$382. I didn't win, I would buy it at that price but not this point in time.
I emailed the seller and he indicated the mark on the Kangaroo was on the mylar, not on the coin, which would have made the coin a Choice UNC+ if not a Gem.
Oh well, maybe next time.

That seller is a known coin cleaner. I think you're better off not having won it.

That being said the price realised indicates that people think it might be a proof. It certainly looks like one. I don't like what I see in fields above the Kangaroo's tail and to the left of KG. Someone may well end up being burned.

I was well out of the ballpark if people were bidding as if it were a proof coin.
My bid was around a good Choice UNC, and only because of the nice strike.

markn, when you refer the above the tail and the KG, I can see the slight scuff mark. Is this what you are refering too ?

Apart from the Proofs in the 59, nearly all the 59's I've seen slabbed or unslabbed seem to have light to heavy streaky planchets.
Could this be something else to look out for ?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that before, business strike 1959 pennies don't look like that. It's either a proof strike or a harshly cleaned business strike.

You're absolutely right, it is a nice coin, but you should be careful, a brilliant mirror finish like that isn't consistent with an original 1959 business strike penny, they have a brilliant cartwheel finish. In fact, 99% of business strike pre-decimal coins are struck with a brilliant cartwheel finish, so if a pre-decimal (or early decimal) coin doesn't display cartwheel lustre, you should immediately question whether its been cleaned.

In this case however, you can tell its a proof strike by the surface curvature around the bust, that is a characteristic exclusive to the proof strike.

1959-Melbourne-Penny---Ebay

I've highlighted in this pic what I mean about the surface curvature, note the lines going towards the bust, this is caused by the intense strike pressure required to produce the proof strikes. It's not a characteristic of every proof, but it is a characteristic of the 1959 copper proofs (and to some degree the silver proofs).

I guess I'm glad I didn't win it then. A proof coin would look a little unusual in a type album along with business strikes.
