Oh for gods sake... I didn't post it here to "promote" the listing. I just happened upon this forum when I was trying to find out more about the thing because I realized after I put it up for sale that I might have been wrong about it. I posted it as an error coin because I thought that was what it was and I admit that I was, most likely WRONG. This forum seemed like a good place to look and thank you to all the people who have been helpful with this. I didn't read the entire "the rules" then because the one that made any difference in that situation was spelled out in the reply telling me that I wasn't supposed to post the link. I have since read them if that makes you happy. And yes, I did just copy and paste. So? I still wanted to get peoples opinions about it. Also, you blocked me on ebay? That just seems childish. I have already admitted that I was wrong and removed the listing. I will re list it when I find out enough about it and let the bidder know so they have a chance at it then.
I would like to make peace with you baysinger626 Perhaps I boxed you into the kind that so often come here with their first post with other agenda and disregard the rules which are here for a reason. I am man enough to say I was harsh with you and for that I do apologize. I have been here a pretty long time and have seen all sorts of new members come in and maybe I was in a bad mood yesterday and went overboard trying to keep the community the way I feel it should be. I wish we could let it go now. I hope that you stay here and that you will forgive the unwelcome start I gave you. Thank you and welcome to CCF.
If you posted the pix and asked what it was, that's asking for advice. Having put it up for sale and asking could be considered promoting, and that tactic is often used by spammers. Nothing will be gained by discussing semantics at this point.
CCF is a close-knit group, and ppl like TheNickelGuy make lots of contributions to keep this forum and hobby clean and enjoyable, including pointing out apparent ebay scams.
CCF has some rules designed to protect users, and sometimes I disagree with them or feel they overshoot their goals, but that's not my place to decide. Having posted on many groups, I can understand why people skip "da rulez", which are usually a waste of time reading. Even now, I occasionally get smacked by some rule out of left field.
My still stands. Hang around and contribute, and you'll be fine.
Thank you TheNickelGuy. I'm sorry I caused such a stir and I will try my best to adhere to the rules.
So anyway.. Any idea what this might be plated with? It looks like it could be silver, but there are a few scratches and if it were silver over brass I would expect to see tha brass under those scratches. The might not be deep enough I suppose.. but when something is plated isn't the plating super extra thin? Could it have been part of a mint set or something that came silver plated or composed of different materials? I still havent had a chance to weigh it.. I need to get a good scale.
I am very happy that those clouds have passed and thank you for being a good sport. Thanks Big Fred for putting that so eloquently. I don't think it is a wrong metal, such as a quarter blank planchet that was struck in place of a Sacagawea. It would be noticeably different in shape and appearance. The quarter size would be the most logical closest wrong planchet error to occur. I think the scratches you see are probably there from before the coin was plated. I have never seen somebody plate a coin but it must be easy enough. Here is a video that may be one way that this dollar found its fate.
Electroplating is cool. I have seen coins struck on the wrong planchet and this obviously isn't one of those. I was referring to like a special mint set or something.. Like I have seen Eisenhower dollars from the late 70s stuck on silver planchets, even though the coins produced for circulation were copper nickel clad. Maybe this is something like that? some sort of special edition maybe?
Only one special issue of golden dollars has ever occurred but it did not involve a compositional difference. The 5000 Sackies given to artist Glenna Goodacre in 2000 as payment for her winning design were given a special burnished finish.
Wasn't there something like five pure gold ones also minted? I think I remember reading about it and if I remember right they were sent up on the space shuttle or something like that can't remember for sure. John1
In 1999, the US Mint did strike 39 Sacagaweas on 22kt $10 GAE planchets, 27 were destroyed and 12 flew up on the Space Shuttle Columbia. I intentionally did not mention them because they are not really relevant to the discussion for the simple fact that all 12 have been remanded to the safety of Fort Knox and will never be owned in the public domain. Glenna Goodacre had ~3000 of her Sackies slabbed by ICG and sold them to collectors.
Plated, and you can buy them online. They plate the entire coin so it appears to be uniformly the same color, even around the edge. Not a fake, but certainly not an error.
