Nick, I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad. I haven't looked at my 2004 Proof set for years. Last time I looked it was lovely pristine coins with my favourite coin...that sparkling holographic coin. But now I see what you mean. COINcidence? I am devestated that the $1 has gone the way it has, the other coins look great with a little moonlike streak across them...but that poor dollar coin. Here's my lot to see the same, but different: Am I happy or sad? I don't know...I think I'm sad only because of the $1 coin.

Actually the 20 cent looks like it is frosted one side of the rainbow & normal on the other. Does anyone know when the frosting of the $1 is done ? if the frosting process happens last ( after all the coins are in the case ready to be sealed ) & if the frosting machine was having issues ( not working properly )it may have sprayed on to the other coins, maybe ? Maybe I'm just clutching at straws here to LOL.

goatiman23's set basically looks like mine. I looked at that pic and was like "Hang on.. I didn't post that pic :O" Almost identical basically :P
And yeah, it's definitely a shame about the 1 dollar :( ... That's why I bought the set lol... For the 1 dollar :P

I might post a picture of my set like the way goatieman has done his.. Just for a comparison.
So, the coins in the 2004 actually 'end' up like that over time? :O ... Or is it a RAM error?

What I find fascinating, is the fact that the "damage" to the other coins appears radially around the $1, which suggests a likely chemical reagent, decomposition or vaporised leachate, firstly affecting and then emanating from the holographic dollar coin.
Are the holographic 2004's ticking timebombs, and what about pad printed coins?

I should have slabbed the silly thing. Nick, same as you the holographic coin was just too pretty...not any more. I might have to buy the coin on it's own on ebay. We might have to contact the mint. Appleangel, if you can dig up the old forum post about this "A plague o' both your coin sets!" I'd really appreciate it. Cheers.

goatieman, I agree... I think we do have to contact the mint :(
I wonder if all of the 2004 proof sets are like this :( ... I really love the 1 dollar :'( I would love to see if I can find a 2004 proof set that won't be affected by the one dollar haha

I agree; the damage certainly seems to be radiating out from the $1 in an almost biological fashion. I don't know what process the RAM used to attach a hologram onto a coin, but I suspect it's the hologram itself that's either degrading or reacting with the packaging. If so, then it's likely that in a few years time, the only undamaged 2004 proof coins are going to come from sets that were disassembled straight away. But if it's the hologram that is self-destructing, there won't be any undamaged 2004 $1 proof coins at all. To make a die for a "cameo effect" proof coin, the entire die is sandblasted, making the entire surface matte or "frosty". Then the parts they wish to be un-frosted get polished.

So, does that mean that the only way I can get an undamaged 2004 proof 1 dollar is off ebay? :(

Fees are a lot less from memory & they are'nt as big as ebay but there are some very good sellers & items there, have a look through their coins & notes category, some of our members here are sellers there & they may be able to help you further.
