If this is a split planchet it split before being rimmed. If it split anytime after I think the rim would be flat on one side. So, let's say it split before, then was rimmed and then was struck by a reverse die and a die cap?

may be a retained broken die (rev.) tossed in with a split planchet. OR it could be PMD. I would need to see it in hand. The absence of some bleed through details is alarming (for a split planchet)

I can't say but I would pay $20 for the learning possibilities. Or send it to nickelsguy for an in hand opinion.

It looks to me like a uniface strike on a thin planchet. This could happen if the thin planchet rode into the striking chamber on top of another planchet.

Why the planchet is thin is hard to say for sure - it could have been rolled thin or split in the rimming machine.

I thought of that as well Joe, but then I would have expected rim damage or distortion on the "mirror side".

Joe, that is probably unlikely, because it would mean an entire sheet or strip being rolled thin... and we would see more than a single example of this error. I am somewhat scratching my head like Mike is, because if it was on top of another planchet, it would be out of the collar and larger in diameter, and my eyes are seeing what Randy is seeing - looks like a 1983 brockage... definitely a coin needed in hand to make a decision... even then, it might not be conclusive... Thanks for sharing H.

Coin in hand. I believe it to be a split planchet. The crack on the Rev. is PMD due to bending and the rim distortions are also PMD. Nice example. Thanks for the opportunity to see it in hand. Coin back in the mail.
