However, what would be the least damaging test to prove that it indeed plated?

Specific gravity test.

Either weight or Specific Gravity measurement would be completely non-destructive. A plated coin should have a weight within the planchet's tolerance since electroplating adds a negligible amount of metal.

OK all thanks for the info. I guess I will have to keep a closer eye on my change for a REAL error coin.

I found a 1950 s that was plated the other day. It was horribly worn under the plating. Made me laugh a bit. Someone's science project. You can also turn them "gold"

Is your penny slightly magnetic? If so, you have an error

They are out there - can't speak for the OP's coin though.

Rackster,
Just to be clear:your 1986 cent looks like it is missing the copper plating. The OP's coin is a 1980 which is a copper coin, also the OP's coin is very shiny as if it was plated in chrome or mercury.

If it is slightly magnetic then he almost certainly has a nickel plated coin. NOT an error.

Hi John - missed the OPs date. I guess it wasn't big enough in the title or I was more enamored by 'silver' . I've seen a few plated jobs at the LCS; usually evident just by visual observation (devices/details wash out). OPs coin has a similar appearance but they are distant shots and blurry.
