i agree EF you could probably argue gEF tho. Also the orb under the cross on the crown looks okay usually it is one of the first things to go on a worn coin.

I'm going out there on this one, but I reckon that would be aUNC if there is plenty of lustre in the fields.
Big coins like that will always mark up easy, and the orb is just touched off.

Yes the lines on the orb are good also the jewels are virtually untouched, they loose their definition extremely fast in circulation.
The ear and the hair is a heap better in hand, I am definitely going to have to get a half decent camera

trout1105: I suggest you buy yourself a USB microscope.
They can be had for about $80.

There in no eyepiece, the image goes direct to the screen, and to record the image, a single mouse click is all that is required, which is recorded as a JPEG file.
Some skill is required to set up the lighting, but that can quickly be acquired.

Have a look ar some of the images posted by
nancyc.
They are most effective, and provide all the justification you will need to buy one.

JAYCAR in Perth would be able to sell you one. Give them a 'phone call.

I have one Sel but any coin larger than a 3d or 1 cent is impossible to photograph the entire coin.
The close ups were taken with the USB digital and they are fine.
I use it all the time when I get new batches of 3d and 6d coins to get a grade and look for the odd error, they are fantastic for that and detailed close up work.
I am taking enwarbs advice and have decided to upgrade my aging camera and go for something with a few more megawhatsits so that I can get a real picture instead of a scan of the coins.
I'm afraid that my IPhone and my old Kodak easy share are not up to the task.
Anyway its a good excuse to spend a few quid and get a new toy

I have seen a school science lab. retort stand used to mount the microscope.
In this case, you just lift the microscope up to 18" above the coin, to photograph all of it.

Additional lighting may be required which you can set up at an oblique angle, to accentuate the relief on the coin.

Hey trout, have you read my thread re the USB Scope yet, the one where I talk about using Tupperware containers for elevation?

https://goccf.com/t/111156&whichpage=2

All the info is pretty much on P2, so see what you think.

Now, a bit of news about my Kaiser Baas, it died! I used it yesterday, today, it's dead, only 4½ months old, so I took it back to Harvey Norman, they had no more in stock so I got a refund, hot footed it off to Jaycar and I now have a Digitech QC3247, which does up to 400X magnification.

I haven't used it yet, but it's so similar to the KB one, it even works off the same software. The only noticeable difference is the barrel is a little longer, so that's how come it will do 400x. Cost $79.

Most piccies posted from here on will be taken with it, so here's hoping it's as good as the Mark1 version.
