 I have to say that I don't have much experience with Canadian coins as I mostly collect U.S coins but I think DBM may be right about this coin being whizzed. I wasn't exactly sure if the luster pattern is typical of Canadian coins but the first thing that crossed my mind, after seeing the second picture, was whizzed. The look and the pattern of the luster appears to be similar to the look and pattern that I have seen on whizzed U.S coins. Whizzing is a process that attempts to create the simulation of mint luster. If I am not mistaken, pre 1901 Canadian coins can get quite pricey in grades of AU and above which creates an incentive to try to add luster so that it would appear to be in a higher grade than it is. Even with all that said, I hope I am wrong and it comes back exactly as you hope it will. Whizzed or not, you have a nice coin!  |

Well, I've lined up a buyer, and I'm just going to let him offer whatever he feels is appropriate, no need getting a "cleaned tag" from ICCS

I also vote whizzed. The lustre doesn't look right. There is obvious wear on the obverse, which should not exist if that lustre is real.

looks almost too good to be true. I'd grade it EF-45 cleaned

Processed or whizzed. May have even had some details sharpened to make it appear to be a better grade. Get your money back!! Sorry, but that's my opinion.

Absolutely 100% whizzed.
I'd stake my first born on it.
Whizzed coins always look like ms67's without magnification.
Everyone on this site has got to be able to identify these whizzed coins.
It doesn;t take much time, as soon as you've seen one, you'll be able to spot them the rest of your life.
Remember what they say about whizzed coins...."good from far, but far from good".

GregJG...I read your last post and I'd recommend not selling it to your 'lined up' buyer without disclosing the fact that the coin is whizzed.
Selling it undisclosed is very dishonest.
Don't defend it by saying 'well I'm not sure if it's whizzed or not"
Believe me...."It's whizzed!"
Better option is to return it, get your money back and retain your integrity.

What does whizzed mean? Cleaned or much more to make it look good?

Here's a definition:
Selected term: Buffing (whizzed)
Explanation: A polishing of a coin sometimes with an abrasive that leaves a finish that attempts to counterfeit mint luster. A buffed coin often is worth less than one that has not been cleaned.

The important thing to note is a whizzed coin quite often looks at quick glance to be an ms66 or higher!
The lustre is there but it's a different type of lustre and the 'whizzing' process smooths out all the imperfections or marks in the field.
This is why a whizzed coin looks to be such a high MS grade.
Once you see one 'in-hand' anmd under 10X, you will never (or should never) make the mistake again of misattributing a whizzed coin.
They are extremely easy to identify.
Whizzing was the rage in the 1970's alongwith with dipping.
I remember some large coin shows in the 70's and you didn't see one toned coin in any of the dealers' showcases, but that's another topic.....

Spend 20 bucks and send it to be graded. If it comes back "not" whizzed, you're in the money! If it comes back "whizzed", you just invested 20 bucks to save your reputation. $20 bucks well spent if you ask me.

It's whizzed.
I'll bet anyone $100 that it is and I'll even give you 5 to 1 odds.

Oh, there's no question that it's whizzed.
It'll sit in my collection for a good long time labelled "Cleaned - Whizzed"

Parts of that coin, like the rim and other high elements almost suggest that coin was, or almost was, mint-state, before processing. There are also traces of a fingerprint on the left side of the obverse. So aside from being whizzed, then it was most certainly "dipped to death" to try and get that fingerprint subdued.
Sad that someone would do that to a Victorian 25-cent coin that was most certainly AU or better in the first place...
