Interesting find Garret.

I would like to let you know that your use of flashing lights on the ebay auction are very very monotonous, and it caused me to stop reading well short of the end of your explanation. It started wigging out my eyes having the flashing so close to the writing! That fact alone would have me never visit any of your other auctions, so I just wanted to pass along in case you want to consider a new format. It may be working great for you, so certainly take this as my opinion only. I just wonder if others have passed up future auctions from you because of this. Just a thought.....

Hello, tights24, I will take that under advisement. I didn't realize it would bother some. Thanks

I'm certainly not telling you how to list your coins. It was just something that I noticed when I attempted to read though the listing.

I honestly don't know if it's the combination of Black background with bold white lettering AND the lights or what. I would just suggest doing yourself a favor and looking at the item while not logged into ebay. Just read down through the entire explanation after pausing and looking at every photo like a buyer would. Maybe it's just me, or maybe you will see what I am saying if you look at the listing as if you were an interested error collector per say.

Regardless, welcome to the forum!!

Please remember that the views expressed by us, people who post messages here, do not represent that of Coin Community.

As a numismatist and an ebay seller, I find it irresponsible to post auctions before you know what you have. To list something as an error you should first know for sure that it is. Please understand I am simply telling you my opinion on your tactics.

As far the coin goes, I think it is just an odd die gouge of some kind. The only "G" on the coin that could have made this is in the word God. That "G" looks different than the one you show.

Also I think, I could be wrong, that dropped letters maintain their direction.

Hello peachymargarita,
I respect your opinion but I have many pictures that show an obvious G. previously you said I had found the mint mark. I'm not quite that simple. There is definitely an uppercase G and in fact I see two G's overlapping. I've seen die gouges. In regard to the size of the G it does look consistent with the size of the incuse G of IN

Hey garretterika,

Trust me if I am wrong, not the first time, I will be the first to apologize. I have paid no attention to all of the Washington dollar "errors" because I believe it to be hype. I am not sure how the edges of these coins are even produce. If you or anyone here knows, I would love to find out.

As far as dropped letters go there has to be an incused die for this to happen. The letters on the edge of these coins are incused so that means the die, or what ever is producing them, is raised. This would not allow junk to build up and cause a dropped letter.

So is the "G" raised or incused on your coin? Lets get that figured out first.

I'm seeing a lot of these on auctions with an extra incused letter on the edge.

Let me throw this out for discussion:

What if the obverse or reverse of a prez dollar made contact with the edge of another dollar during bagging, shipping, handling, etc., etc. For example purpose only: lets say one of the designer's initial on the coin hit pretty hard on the edge of another coin. Couldn't the letter or letters of that designer's initial now impart itself (which would be incuse and backwards) into the edge of the other coin. Could this be what we are seeing on these?

Lets go another step further. We have seen some with what looks like an incuse and backwards "S" extra letter on the edge. Again, could we have the letter "S" of STATES made that heavy contact with the edge of the other dollar and that would be what we are seeing?

Again, I'm just throwing this out as food for thought and discussion.

Chime in ...

I think this is more what we are looking at. On this one I'm not seeing where a letter "G" this size would be found on the obverse or reverse.

I'm not so sure it's a letter "G." It looks deformed along with another contact mark.

Im still learning just have a shot of this.

For me my oponion.

If it is dent with other coin the mark should not be raised instead dent or sunken.

Yes other letter on the edge inscription may appear but on the rarity of error and variety will be rate on the number of coins found the rarest will be more valuable for their are so many active collectors acquiring a new find,I dont know what happen to the process in the mint or quality control maybe the mint just let it go or most error or variety in new release is more open now in public than in the past just an opinion.

"If it is dent with other coin the mark should not be raised instead dent or sunken."

I said in my post "incuse" which means sunken in.

The question still stands, is the letter in question incused?

Upon close inspection in several different light sources and with different magnifiers, the letter is raised. The G is the same shape and size as the G of IN GOD WE TRUST. But that G of the motto is of course incused. There are also two distinct G's reversed and one on top of the other.
