All your photos are under uniform lighting, this will hide surface damage (or it will show as discolouration). I generally avoid purchasing coins from photographs such as these as they can hide cleaning hairlines and other types of surface damage.

Here's an example of what I consider an ideal photo. It doesn't make the coin look as good as it shows every little defect, but it's much more useful in grading a coin. I achieve this by mounting the camera at 90 degrees to the coin and everything on auto with the flash on - no additional lighting is used. I photograph all my coins like this except for mirror proofs.

ooo shiny, nice coin :)
The natural light brings out the detail the best, you can see emu feathers.
I don't think any type of pre decimal coin I own you can see the emu feathers.

he he just realised your coin was in a 2x2, was so intently checking out the detail that I didn't realise.
It must be holding some static or have something inside the 2x2 because each different time you take a pic it has some dust or fluff on it. I don't think it's on the coin.

I think if you really want to show the surface of the coin, don't you just tilt it on an angle? That's how I look for marks of a coin.

AA, On the first 2 Rev pictures, what is peeping out under the H of shilling? I can't see it on the subsequent pictures, just the first 2.

I guess it could be a Die Polish Line. Or is there really nothing there at all and it's just an optical illusion?

Nice coin anyway!

OK,thanks for all the replies.
Nancy there is a tiny die crack coming out of the bottom of the left hand leg of the H, is that what you mean ?

Yep, that's it. Thought I could see something. I'm not sure it's a die crack though. Just above the cross bar, it looks like there's another tiny bit showing through and I think that if it was a die crack, the lines would be on top of the H, not coming from underneath it, that's why I thought it was more likely a DPL.

I took the liberty of doing this:

Yeah there's definitely another little bit above the cross bar,i take it it's like a slip with the tool they use too engrave the letters out that does this ?

I'm so disappointed in my inability to recognise this coin as being cleaned,i really need to think about whether to continue collecting at all.

Don't get down-hearted, it's all a learning experience. What indicates to me that it's probably been wiped is the number of parallel lines in the obverse fields behind the king's head and in and around the emu. When you're looking at a coin you have to hit it with light and rotate it and tilt it continually. If there's any hair-lines they'll pop into appearance at some point as you tilt and rotate the coin. I can pick most cleaned coins but I can tell you I am glad that PP is sitting next to me sometimes because she spots things I do not and vice versa.
