I'm pretty sure its an error. There is no damage to any other part of the coin. It would seem to be hard to indent it on one side and not have the other side or the rim damaged at all.

Top of the "G" looks to be stamped inside the groove and the rim is preserved. To be sure if the "G" is inside, I need a better pic, or you can check by yourself.
In my opinion, it is an error: a minor planchet clip filled by the pressure of the minting process.
GREAT error coin!
(your assumption that it would be hard to damage only one side of the coin is not true - I saw many cases... but nickel is VERY hard and to damage it someone needs aserious equipment in the garage)

The letter G is visible inside the "hole" - the planchet was pressed with less material in that area.
The nickel sheet is secured in the bed by pegs. The peg is quite small in diameter and if the cookie cutter is not aligned, part of the peg hole is cut, resulting on a small circular clip - I have one.

I thought it was a little lamination flake or peel. The outer ring is pure nickel, and it is not uncommon to see small little lamination peels on the nickel ring part of twoonies. This one is a bit larger than normal, certainly deeper, and I think that being close to the rim, is what is causing some head scratching here...
