From what I can make out my guess is you have a MS-64 coin.

From what I see, this is probably a high-end 63 with a pretty good shot at 64. Maybe a few bucks more than I might have paid, but certainly in the category of "hold it for a few years, and prices will come to you" as these are pretty liquid in the market. Nobody ripped you off. If you're planning on keeping it, sit back and be satisfied. Whatever anyone's opinion of the numerical grade is, we'll all agree it's a nice one. By the way, it's VAM-14A, I think. http://www.vamworld.com/1878-CC+VAM-14A

No disagreement with your proposed course, but if it comes back 63 you'll be in the hole for the additional cost of grading. Me? I'd risk it. PCGS, right?

No, NGC. I have a membership with them. I actually enjoy sending off coins cause of the excitement of not knowing. But I also know that MS 63 1878 cc morgans are selling around 360 on ebay easily. I dont take huge risk when I pay for raw coins but I feel confident this one will come back at least a 63. I plan on getting them to grade at the Houston Money Show in November. If it comes back a 63 its cool. It may come back a 64 or 65 maybe. 65 is wishful thinking. $1500

NGC will do, especially if you're already a member. You may be new, but you've done your homework.

Also Dave.. How rare is this VAM 14A. I see there are no reports of any graded with this..

Not rare. You see no reports because demand doesn't warrant a premium. I only attributed it because I'm pedantic that way.

Pictures are a bit small but it does appear to be at least a MS-63 with a shot at a MS-64.

with the 63 also, chin and neck marks are distracting to my eye. I love the 78 CC as it was my first CC picked in the raw that I had NGC grade also. Let us know how it comes back after the Nov show. Nice pick

Tough to tell from the photos but MS-63 sounds about right

I will take a MS 63. To me that is an excellent grade for a Carson City. Common, but I think they will go up in value sooner rather than later. By the way thats a real nice 63. I would give it a 64. But thats just my opinion.
