So help me this is the last post on this subject that I will make!

I sincerely hope that those of you that feel as I do, that a lot of work still needs to be done on bringing in all shades and colors of people to this hobby, stand up and fight for it every way you can. I intend to keep on calling attention to this situation, and will ask questions of those persons who might utherwise not think of it.

For the people that think this was nothing more than a way of belittling other human beings, I can only say I'm sorry you feel that way. It was not intended. I hope some day you can make yourselfs come to grips with this topic without thinking of it as "bating". Only then will we get something acccomplished. Why?

I think the black/white post was thought provoking indeed.

I'm going to air an opinion of mine here but I wouldn't want it to be taken the wrong way by anyone (i try not to do this too often cos it always end up offending someone somewhere).

But I think such topics as the black/white need addressing in the way that it was. It was handled seriously and it was a serious point.

As far as I'm concerned, black, white, Chinese, Egyptian, French, tall, small, male, female. Who care's we're all human beings at the end of the day. I think we should be embracing differences and considering them in relation to one another on an equal footing rather than trying 'not to offend', for trying not to 'offend', offend what?

The longer we keep such issues not talked about, the longer there will be a stigma attached to such issues. Get it out in the open and get it dealt with. If I was black I wouldn't be ashamed of the fact, if I was French I wouldn't be ashamed of the fact.

It's a common problem in society today that many will find certain things possibly upsetting to certain groups, but yet they have come to this conclusion on their own without actually consulting the said group to find out if it bothers them or not! Which means we're all still living on stereotypes even if we try to convince everyone we're not.

Anyhow that's all I had to say.

Susan and Old Dan, No hard feelings here! I guess I was impressed how well most of the members were trying to discuss something, in a very professional way, that is normally NOT discussed. Must admit I was very hesitant to put my Two Cents worth in as I am fully aware the most honest observations can be taken a million different ways by the reader, whoever he or she may be. I wrote a column for a local paper for 5 years and found out very quickly just one little word could bring the wrath down upon you. It wasn't what you meant so much as how they, the reader, percieves what you meant! My worst "ripping" came over the use of the word "antics"! Will never forget the guy giving me h____ over that word when he didn't have a clue what it meant or was? I patiently listened to him rant and rave, for what seemed like a half hour, and then in the end he thanked me for a fine columed and said he and his entire family looked forward to reading my column every week and that they really appreciated my work. I was dumbfounded! Worst ripping of my life with a fantastic ending?

Susan, I believe you did the right thing. When the author of a thread would like it removed, as moderator, you have to make a descision. You'll always find someone who disagrees with whichever decision you make. Using you common sense is the best guide.
I also don't think you need to change how you handled the situation.

The topic was sure to get people worried about offending others. People are often offended too easily. It did raise an interesting question though....Just what in OUR cultural backround inspires us to collecting coins.

Terry that's what they call reader interpretation which is sometimes way of from author's intent.

It is hard to "read" another person when only in print. The words can come across as cold when that is not the intention. I have just heard about this thread being pulled this morning, so I am not sure if it were one of my comments or not. If my words offended anyone I am sorry.
I thought that this subject would turn ugly quickly as racial issues usually do. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that they had not (as of Wednesday). We are quite lucky to have such a well diversed group of people here on the forum. We all come from different backgrounds and have many different views on many different subjects. It is nice to see that "we" can talk about sensitive subjects like adults.
I am a bit sorry to see that the thread has been deleted, but I also understand how hard of a decision that is to do.

I think it was a learning experience for each of us. It is not often that such topics are discussed openly on a forum such as this and everyone seemed to have the best intentions and I honestly think everyone, in their own way, would welcome anyone, any age, regardless of their nationality or skin color into our world of collecting. I trade all over the world and quite honestly I haven't found anyone I wouldn't trade with again and they all, for the most part, are faceless collectors, just an email on a computer screen but they have become honest trusted friends. Many have taken the time to send or email a photograph and we have shared other hobbies and desires which I have found most fascinating. One very good collecting friend in the Netherlands just fulfilled a life long dream, thanks to his wife, as he had always wanted to take a hot air balloon trip! To him, it was a gift of a lifetime! I have learned we all are pretty much alike. Our governments may be different, our cultures are diverse, and religious beliefs do vary but in the end most of us have the same hopes and desires for family, friends and life. And I can say there is a huge following of this hobby all over the world and I am glad to be a part of it!

This topic made me think quite a bit. I have internet friends all over the world now, and I had never even considered the personal differences between us. I just looked at how great it is to get different viewpoints from so many diverse areas. I see our forum as very special in that the members here were able to discuss a very sensitive topic in a very intelligent and constructive manner.

So, I guess the queston is, how do we create an environment where EVERYONE feels welcome and free to express their viewpoints without fear of offending anyone?

Being an optimist, I believe there's a way.

The answer is simple, you let all speak there minds no matter what--Not like what happened to me over at the old CoinWorld forum where an innocent "confucious says" joke got me banned for ever and ever because it is a ahh "family oriented" forum. Like if todays teenagers on forum like these donno what jokes are..or bout bird & bees, you would be surprised what 7 years old now know---I think to many are trying to be "politically correct" whereas they should let it all hang out and SPEAK YOUR MIND--" Anyways if I upset any one with my response to bad--Susan, to you I say, I think you did the proper thing at that time. It is your place, if you want to pull a thread you have the power, especially since the originator requests it--I think that should be the ultimate reason--I believe you did the proper thing--althought I know u are now struggling with that decision, never the less I believe you should do it again if in the future another originator asks for removal--repectfully

I agree with AEtheling! We have already created an open forum! And to think I haven't even had my hands cracked by a ruler yet? Another GREAT freedom I have found here is we all, at some time or another, have coins we want to get rid of and we DON'T have to be afraid of mentioning it! Isn't that what we are all about? Buying, selling and trading to get what we want? And ND has given us another option and that is the charitable end of things! And on top of that, I along with others, have offered free storage for all your coins for all eternity in a nice safe atmosphere in Indiana, free from all the ocean's "salty" air blowing in from all the coast lines! Basically we have it all covered, don't we? And, for the most part when we do stray off on coins nobody is screaming "get back on topic"? It gives us all a chance to get to know one another and what we do when we aren't coining! So far I must say Susan and Bobby, with the help of others, have created what we were all yearning for and for that I THANK YOU! A new home with no mortgage payments!

Each of us is a guest here, just as if we were a guest a Susan's house. If we all behave ourselves there will never be a problem.
I'd also like to thank Susan and others on this forum for making it such a friendly place.

OK GROUP HUG [:p] lol

I think the "silver lining" behind this event is glowing brightly. This thread has allowed even deeper feelings to come forth. This solidifies, in my mind, the quality of the people that particpate in this wonderful forum that Bobby and Susan have provided for us. Thanks guys, Mike
