Rare? It just might be. On the other hand, it IS 40 oz. of silver, currently worth about $1350. Not being a collector of rare items, I would rather have 40 ASEs or Maples and the rest as change.

The funny thing is that the whole reason I started buying silver bars in the first place was because the premiums (n the 100-ounce bars, at least) were so much lower than the premiums on ASEs or Maples. I'll admit the bars I've purchased have grown on me a bit, especially the older hand-poured ones, but I still don't see any point in paying anything extra just because a particular block of silver happened to be poured 80 years ago instead of last week.

I really like the look of this one. It looks more like a true "bar" than a "loaf" though it is hard to tell from the angle of the photos (bars having parallel sides vs loafs having a tapered side and rounded edges).

What really gets me is the 3/4. There standing behind the 999 is an extra 3/4 thrown in for good measure.

Oh, and that is a bit of a premium.

Edited because I can't spell worth a lick.

In 50 years that could be a great deal. But I agree it looks nice but not a chance with that premium

TBK - I know me and you have done plenty of PM transactions - but dang, that bar is way over priced and over-rated. Sorry bud - not feeling it!

We all know darn well they did not pay $150 per oz for it. It looks like they might have it for a while.

If it was not grossly overpriced I would jump all over that bar.

I recall seeing these in smaller sizes also

Without looking at the price, it's a very nice looking bar. Like someone else said, has that very old look. And being someone that loves looking at cool bars, it's something new to me, so it grabs my attention really quick.

Then I calculate the price on my computer calculator and realize its $198.88 PER OUNCE! Suddenly, it's a normal bar with an ugly price tag.

In case some didn't get what I was saying. I would never actually purchase this Though I would pay a considerable premium to spot for rare item. I would never pay $200 per for a bar. It is just hella cool IMHO. I remember when I first started looking at this site probably 18 months ago a man was telling a story about a 1000 oz bar he found while yard sailing that was also from US Assay Dept. I love american history and to me nothing says American History like this bar does. Obviously this is just my opinion and carries no weight to some.

I definitely understand paying premiums for rare items, I guess where I may differ is I dont understand it for bars. With minted coins theres laws regulating the number and when they can be produced. Once 2012 passes 2012 coins cant be minted. With private bars they can fire up the line again any time they want to or someone else can buy the rights to make more. They can even put whatever numbers they want on it, they can literally just do whatever they want
