Hi,
I see several guesses for 62 and a few for 61.
I was the only one so far that thought 63.
Could someone please take a stab at visually explaining what characteristics on this coin display MS 62 traits and why this coin is neither MS 63 nor MS 61?
If the specific area in question can be pointed out with arrows, that would be extremely helpful.
Thanks for the help., mdpmedia

mdpmedia: Here's a 61 and a 63 that have been certified by PCGS. Comparing these to the OP's coin you'll see the differences. True MS63s are tough to make on any gold Indians. PCGS MS61: PCGS MS63:

Interesting, those linked from PCGS have the same lines. I'm certainly no gold expert, but it seems this series was especially favored for bezels. Perhaps those lines are because the coin has no rim; just the way the metal flows during the strike?
You do have a nice coin there, oih82w8!

Regarding the PCGS photos of the 61 and 63 I notice that the 61 has a few more scratches in the field.
But I am confused on the Eagle's neck since the neck feathers of the 61 seem to have more detail compared to those on the 63. This could be my screen resolution or an optical illusion; I am unsure of the reason.
Please point out exactly what the differences should be between a 61 and a 63 using these PCGS photos.
thx, mdpmedia

I have found that the incuse Indian Head Quarter and Half Eagles are a little more difficult to grade and that I have been using eagle feather details to pick my examples. Another example of buying the coin not the slab.

An incuse design always throws me. The $2.5 and $5 Indian gold pieces are the hardest series for me to grade. Even with practice I conclude that I just stink at any accuracy of this series, also not my favorite designed US coin. I have seen a couple of matte proffs though that really caught my eye, but the price, oh-vey!

Luster is a very major player on MS indians. The luster rubs off so easily, it is almost non-existent in the fields on AU coins. MS-61 and 62s usually have weak luster too, it doesn't get strong until MS-63. I was stuck between a 61 and 62 on this one, definitely not a 63...but it doesn't look AU either.

One final comment on oih82w8's coin. If it's truly MS then it deserves a 62 grade. JMHO.
