Then the thing to do would be to petition the government to end the penny? Is this what yall are saying?

Can't speak for all but IMHO, yes. It's pretty hard to remember buying something with a single nickel, let alone a penny.

The average person will think the 5 will take its place and price will go up, and we all saw how well the 1 dollar coins were received

I would not think that but someone else might. Shrug.

As to the $1 coins, the government missed their change opportunity in a couple of ways. First, a lot of people remember what a $1 coin used to look like, such as a Peace or Morgan dollar, even an Ike dollar. So, things that do not look like those coins doesn't really seem to be a dollar. The ones that looked like quarters were especially bad. Second, they should have removed the $1 paper note from circulation so that people would not be using them instead of the coins. $1 bills could still be legal tender but they would disappear by attrition in a few years. I'd be OK with that.

I agree. The only way theyll get it to take is getting rid of the bill. I love the idea of the Presidential dollars but the execution wants that great. The size was to much like a quarter and the color made them look nasty real fast.

People just dont like thing changing, if you dont force them to do something different, they wont

There are some stores ( ones who are known for their high traffic) who round all transactions to the nearest nickle. maybe everystore will be like this soon

I do not want to see the cents melted, so I have to admit bias when I say that I hope the melt ban is never lifted.

That being said, the melt ban when end eventually. However, I do not think it will end until after the one cent coin is discontinued (which I expect sooner rather than later).

Agree on human inertia but would prefer being enticed to do something rather than forced to do it. I am in favor of doing things in better ways, so maybe the gov just needs to sell us on any new ideas they might have rather than just steam rolling them over us.

Depends on the idea to me. If they want to change from a dollar bill to a coin Id prefer they just did it instead of wasting money with ads for why itll be better. But other things Id much prefer they stay out of

They won't even lift the melt ban on wheats, and most of those are pulled from circulation already! I say most because for every $25 dollar box searched we typically find 10-20 of those, which is approximately 6/10ths of a percent of all circulating cents are still wheat pennies.

Definitely regarding the $1 coin, why did they bother making it if they were not going to start winding down grinding out $1 bills, they could have made it a slow transition. I would have loved watching people refuse to stop using the $1 bill, instead turning them into rags before, reluctantly moving over to the coinage.

I wonder how raggedy they would have to get before some of the die-hard bill fans finally gave in and used the coin.

Can anyone post a "law" banning the melting of cents? I know Moy when he was director of the Mint had issued a "rule" saying cents could not be exported for melting, but I am unaware of any law forbidding such action. Any lawyers here that can clarify?

It is a mint regulation, not a specific law.

http://www.usmint.gov/pressroom/ind...lease&ID=724

However, I believe that the regulation is issued in accordance to a law. I am still looking, but I am sure someone will beat me to it.

Canada has the same kind of rule or law or whatever, that you arent allowed to take a particular amount of pennies out of country. I think I heard $5 worth once..which is 10 rolls. hearsay, but thats all I've heard on the subject.

I wouldnt be surprised if Canada did that too. Its wise of the mints to try and protect coins that cost them money to replace. If you melt or take old quarters out of the country theyre more then happy to get the free profit making more

Isn't there a specific company that supplies the US Mint with the paper to make bills? If so, it is no wonder why the dollar coins didn't work out. The company that makes the paper probably pushed very hard to stop the $1 coins.

"Besides, why are people so obsessed with melting coins, anyways? You can sell them as is."
I agree with libertad.

Therein lies the rub, BB. Government is a great example of the old saying, "To a man with a hammer, everything is a nail". Being in charge of things is definitely one BIG hammer.

As far as "running ads" is concerned, it's not necessary. All they need to do is launch an Internet information campaign and then collect some feedback the same way. It would cost a minimal amount and is in keeping with the idea that government exists to serve OUR needs and not theirs.
